Foreign Language programs

Which schools are known for their foreign language programs--particularly romance languages? Which are known for promoting language study along with either business or international relations minors?

Many are known for it including many LACs and ivy schools. However, if I had to pick one school that is probably more well-known for its language department than any other it would be: Middlebury College

agree: definitely middlebury. however, there are many other LACs that have great language programs- i should know, when i was looking at colleges, i was planning on being a spanish and french double major (though i switched halfway through because i found something i liked better). look for schools that have excellent study abroad programs too. for example, connecticut college is nationally known for its emphasis on a wide variety of study abroad opportunities. plus, when i graduated, there were several students who were foreign language majors that received the college's most prestigious academic award (for the top 15 people). conn college has a unique certificate program called cisla, as described in the website:

"CISLA educates its students for an increasingly international world. Students apply and are admitted to CISLA during the sophomore year, but are welcome to participate during the freshman year in a variety of international activities. In the sophomore year students accept the challenge to be CISLA scholars - to reach the required level of oral proficiency in the foreign language, take courses on the origins and dynamics of contemporary society, complete critical skills workshops, and focus on one region of the world and its culture. In conjunction with the challenge, students spend a funded summer internship in the country of his/her focus, and then complete a senior seminar and intergrative project that explores issues related to the major, the international arena, and the foreign language and culture studied."

if you dont want an LAC, georgetown, tufts, GW, have fantastic international programs,

take a look at Kalamazoo in Michigan, a small LAC in which almost everyone spends time abroad. They have a famed international program and also offer majors in economics & business.

Thanks everyone. On paper Middlebury is perfect for me, but when I visited it I hated it. Too far from any urban or suburban area or even a small town, so grey and so cold in August. I was also very concerned about the emphasis (?obsession) with athletics and oudooring. I couldn't live there.

Is there any place like Middlebury someplace more civilized?

Try Dartmouth. It at least has a small town, and the language program is great (the students I talked to didn't even resent the 8AM drills that much...)

Some LACs might have limited course and language offerings, so don't generalize too much about the quality of LAC's language departments.
