i’ve taken 4 years of french in high school, so can i continue that at barnard and also start taking italian like i want?

yup. barnard requires that you complete at least 4 semesters of a language at the college level. if you take ap french or the sat2, you might be able to automatically waive that requirement, or you can take a placement test when you get here. it's nice to have the requirement out of the way because then you are free to experiment instead of taking courses because you have to.
so say you place into 4th semester french.. you can either take that and be done with your requirement, or you can start taking italian and make sure you take 2 years of it. or you could take both at the same time to your heart's content. i know many people here who take multiple languages :)

great to know, thanks very much

i would love to become fluent in french and to be able to get by in italian.

You can take as many languages as you want. I have a friend doing french, spanish and hebrew next semester.
You can place out of the language requirement from AP or SAT 2... and when you get here you do a placement exam.
So for example, I only had to do 2 semesters of french instead of 4, because I placed out. Basically you have to complete up to "Intermediate 2" level.
