foreign language requirements?!?

what are the requirements for The College?? I took an online placement test and got placed into 201. SO, how much spanish will i have to take when it's all said and done??

Two semesters (for 201 and 202). It's all explained in the Arts and Sciences website, you should check that out.

Just out of curiosity, aside from the boredom factor, what are the advantages, if any, of placing into a higher level language class rather than starting from the ground floor, even if you have had the language in high school. Does starting at a higher level reduce the number of courses needed to fill the language requirement. And, not to unduly annoy anyone, the website is silent with respect to Italian (and what AP score places out) which is what D is interested in.

italian: ambiguous from the 2 links ive found on the subject:
http://www.virginia.edu/span-ital-port/ita_undpro.htm
http://artsandsciences.virginia.edu/college/requirements/language_placement_index.html

Advantages of placing out: You only need through 202 (4 semesters if starting at the beginning), by looking at that second link up there you should be able to do the simple math about what placing up/out means.

My D took 3 years of Latin in HS but does not want to continue in college. It appears(?) that American Sign Language is an alternative to a native language as far as fulfilling requirements, and this is something she has always been interested in learning - does ASL count towards language requirements at UVA? If not ASL, I have urged her to study spanish. thoughts?

asl does but its really hard to get into so i would make other plans. spanish is sometimes hard to get into as well, though.

im at SEAS thinking of minoring in a language. I have taken spanish for all of high school but I would prefer a different, more engineer-related language such as mandarin, japanese, or german to become fluent in. Should I still take a language placement exam for Spanish?

Do you really want to take a language other than Spanish more than you want to take Spanish? If yes, then don't bother taking the placement exam. If you are unsure, then take the placement exam. It won't hurt you to take it.
