I think you are missing the point. A 650 or higher on the SAT 2 validates any language competency. Take some practice tests.
I did some practice tests and scored 95% + , I will take both the SAT Spanish test and take Spanish 1 and 2 my senior year.
Excellent.
Others will help me out if I am wrong, but I think a 650+ is equivalent to finishing 4 semesters of college Spanish aka Spanish 4. The risk in taking Spanish 1 and 2 is that a college might think you are trying for the easy A and not challenging yourself. Course “rigor” is important. That is why my opinion is that you would actually look better by taking French or whatever else your school offers.
Do contact a couple colleges once you have a Spanish SAT2 score to see if post 16 will apply regarding having your education in English count as foreign language proficient.
If you take Spanish 2, do you need to take Spanish 1?
Yeah , so I have to take both Spanish 1 and 2 next school year.
I am sorry you have to deal with a school bureaucracy that is so wacky. Is the Spanish teacher approachable? Could he/she give you the Spanish 1 exam and have you pass into the higher level? There would then be a paper trail that you know the material.
Yeah sadly my school isn’t very good. I will have to take both Spanish 1 and 2 next year. On my courses by the time I’m graduated I will have taken every AP class my school offers.
You do not need to take Spanish 1, only Spanish 2. In fact if you take the sat Spanish subject test this June and do well, some colleges may WAIVE the requirement. If you can truly read and write Spanish well, is there ANY community college within driving distance to your home that offers Spanish 2? You could take it over the summer and be done.
But overall I’d take the sat subject in June. And if you truly worry, take two semesters of any language beside Spanish, but if I were you I’d rather use the two slots to complete your units.
Because your counselor doesn’t seem entirely aware of selective universities 's requirements:
- plan to explain this in your additional information section on the commonapp
- prepare a 'brag sheet ’ and fill it out carefully to give your guidance counselor in September
- review your 4year plan and make sure you have
4 units of English (preferably honors or AP), 4 units of social science and history (honors/ap), math through pre-calculus honors or calculus, one art unit, in science 4 units including biology, chemistry, physics, and one more.
How many core classes (listed above) at honors level do you have out if how many your school offers?
How many AP’s does your school offer and how many will you have by the end of senior year?
I will have 8/9 AP classes taken by the time I graduate. My school doesn’t offer honors classes. I will have all other requirements fulfilled In terms of core classes.
okay, that’s very very good.
So the only problem is that class - really, see if there’s a CC offering Spanish 2 over the summer and take that (+ Subject test in June). College Spanish 2 = HS level 3 so you’re covered.
@MYOS1634 No community college around me offers Spanish 2 as they mainly focus on vocational training, so I will be taking Spanish 1 and 2 next year. This is the best solution my councilor could offer me.
Please check. Even if they mainly focus on vocational training, Spanish 1+2 is very common. Check all CC’s within driving distance.
Also, you don’t need to take Spanish 1 before Spanish 2. You probably already know enough to skip Spanish 2 but your school doesn’t offer Spanish 3.
Colleges count LEVEL REACHED,so that taking only Spanish 2 counts as 2 years and taking only Spanish 3 counts as 3 years.
Ask your counselor to place you into Spanish 2 directly.
(I suppose your school doesn’t have Spanish for Heritage Speakers?)
Well I asked her to do that but the school requires you to complete Spanish 1 before you can do Spanish 2.
Which is nuts and a waste of your time. Grrr!
When you be taking the SAT2? If it is before school starts back up in the fall, ask her if she would revisit it once you get your score. The schedule can be readjusted then.
For your own edification, the chart that I was using to convert SAT2 (and AP) scores for college placements is this:
http://admissions.tufts.edu/apply/first-year-students/pre-matriculation-credits/ It shows you how many semesters of college Spanish you would place out of depending on the score. My kids placed out of the colleges’ foreign language requirement by doing this.
Here is a Spanish course placement guide from a different university:
http://spanish-portuguese.berkeley.edu/placement-guidelines/
For clarification, the Spanish course sequences are:
http://spanish-portuguese.berkeley.edu/upcoming-semester/
Non-heritage: 1 → 2 → 3 → 4 → 25
Heritage speaker: 21 → 22 → 25
Ask if the requirement applies to heritage speakers too. Otherwise, you’ll be wasting your time AND scaring off kids struggling to master “I like chocolate. I like strawberries. I like cats. I like dogs.”
In addition, if you get a high SAT Spanish score, the requirement may be waived.
Yeah I asked and it looks like they take don’t make exceptions. it looks like I’m just gonna have to take Spanish 1 and 2 in the same year. I will get more information and post it on here later. I’m currently busy studying and taking AP tests.
Good luck!
Check if there are summer classes in your area or online. You can take it at a community college in summer too.
Good luck!
And do check for community colleges within driving distance (may not be nearest one or in same town) because you could just take just level 2 there and be done over the summer, freeing two high school slots.
