i'm confused about this i have asked counselors and they arent giving me a straight answer? i know you have to take 2 years of foreign language in hs but i took 1 is that ok?

I think two years is the requirement or whatever is the equivalent. Some of the college courses are a heavier load and you can complete it within one year by taking Spanish 1 and Spanish 2 or the two-year route, which consists of Spanish 1A & Spanish 1B and then Spanish 2A & Spanish 2B. I dont think high school is the same though. Does it say 1 & 2 on your transcriptions? You should email an advisor at a UC and ask. I didnt complete 2 years, so I took one year of sign language at my community college, which is equivalent to 2 years foreign language.

in high school i took 1a and 1b so do i have 2 take spanish 2 @cc?

i'm guessing the 1a was for one semester and 1b was for another semester? in that case, yes. you need two years of language.

Well for high school it's two years and 2 semesters in community college

For high school, 4 semesters (2 years, whether it's in 9+10 grades, or 10+11 grade). For community college , it's two semester, in whatever language. ie: japanese 1, japanese 2 - take both it will satisfy the requirement

but since in your case, is it that you took 2 years or just 2 semester at high school?
If it's two years you satisfied it, but if it's only 1 year (2sem) then you have not. But you can just take the second year level at community college (spanish2) to fulfill the reeuirement (which is only one semester/or quarter depening on ur college system)

oh ur just read ur updated post, since im not sure about ur college system im not sure if the 1a and 1b istwo different area or not. As my community college, it's liek

Spanish 1 - Elementary Spanish
Spanish 2 - Elementary Spanish

so if your 1a and 1b is also elementary spanish, then i guess you satisfy the requirement.

If you are completing IGETC then I believe you only need one semester of foreign language.

That is correct. If you did not take 2 years of foreign language in HS, you only need one semester of it to satisfy IGETC in college.

BUT most languge courses are 5 unit classes and are really heavy loads, unless you split it up into 3 unit courses (2A and 2B). This is at least how it is at a lot of colleges. So you can take a 5 unit class that meets either every day of the week for an hour or two nights a week for about 2.5 hours. If that's not doable then you can split it up into 2 3-unit semesters. If it's been a while since you took Spanish, it might be difficult to jump right in to the second course. I did Spanish 1A and didn't see myself doing 3 more semesters or the 5 unit class. I decided to take sign language for two semesters, which is fun and easy. It meets only one night a week.

I would speak with a counselor or take a test to see what level you fall at. If you are planning on going to a UC, you wouldn't want to spend more time than you should just to finish up the laguage requirement.

Our schools elementary Spanish course is only four units and the class meets twice a week for two and a half hours. And this course fills the UC requirement.

I would discuss this with you community college advisers. The community colleges handle certification of the IGETC and will help determine if you have met the requirement and if not how to satisfy it. The UC campuses have no control over how to satisfy IGETC; we can only recommend you complete or not complete IGETC to properly prepare. If you complete IGETC, recommended or not, then we will accept the completed IGETC.
