Foreign Language Units

When colleges say the reccomend a student take 4 years of a foreign language, is that 4 years in high school, or to level 4?

I took Spanish I in 8th grade, so it's not on my high school transcript but I will have completed Spanish IV by the end of this year (junior). So is that 4 or years or 3?

Thanks!

I'd call it four in terms of what that recommendation for 4 years of language is getting at.

They always mean completing the fourth level of a language, which, depending on applicant, may or may not mean taking language all four years of high school.

I'm pretty sure schools just want to see you take the most of your school's Spanish program. If it ends at a fourth level, that's fine, but if it continues onward, schools will like to see you take advantage of that.
