Foreign Language

Question regarding Foreign Language:
Do we need 3 years of same FL or is it fine to have 2 years of Spanish + 1 year Latin?

TIA.

3 years= HS level 3 (as a minimum)
So, Level 3 in Spanish or Level 3 in Latin (or anything else), which can also be achieved with 3 accelerated, dual enrollment semesters in the same language at a local college.

3 years or completion of level 3 in one language

In our school grade 9 has Spanish level II, grade 10 has Spanish level III and so on. Level 1 is in middle school.
Skipped Spanish in grade 11.
So in grade 12, should take Spanish IV or Latin I is fine?

Taking Spanish IV would get you to level 4.

Taking Latin I would leave you at level 3 (from Spanish III).

Is there a reason you’re taking Latin - do you intend to take that in College and want a gentle introduction?

What colleges are you thinking of?

If you want a very selective college/university, you need to reach level 4 rather than having stopped foreign language sophomore year, so take Spanish.

I don’t enjoy FL. The only reason taking is just to fulfill the college requirement.

Didn’t take Spanish in 11th is because of Hybrid/remote situation of school.

I am thinking of T20 schools though I am applying match and safeties too.

You don’t take core classes because you enjoy them - that’s what electives are for. (Otherwise, few people would take Math or Physics :p) Core classes make you a more informed citizen and “train” your brain by stretching it all kinds of ways.
If you’re thinking of T20 schools, then Spanish IV is necessary.

Thank you so much for your timely advice. We have course selection coming up so will make sure to take Spanish.
The only thing I always got confused is when college says 3 years and I completed level III, r they not same?

They are, except that most top universities expect level 4 (or AP), especially if level 3 was achieved sophomore year, when at least one more year could easily be taken.
They expect the 5 core classes every year, with some leeway senior year if you reached level 4 junior year (or level 3 with only senior year left so that it makes sense for you to take something else, although that’s less favorably seen.)

Yes. that makes sense. Thank you so much for the detailed response.
