Foreign Language

Hello,
I am currently taking German I as a freshman in High School but I do not like our teacher. She doesn't teach us anything and gives us random quizzes that I get low A's on. However, she didn't prepare us at all for our Midterm. On it, I got the second highest grade in the class and it was a 71. I am normally an A student and have A's in all my other classes so this was quite a shock.

My problem is that I went to a small private school in 7th grade and took Latin I. Then, after switching to public school, only Spanish and French were available so I chose Spanish. Now I am in German and hate the teacher. I really don't want to go back to Spanish II after a year off.

I have heard that colleges like consecutive years of a language? I am considering dropping German II next year and instead taking AP Statistics as a sophmore instead. Any input on this idea?

Thanks,
David

It depends on what schools you’re looking at and what they recommend. In general, yes, selective schools want to see consecutive years of the same language.

Well all of the schools I am interested in are engineering or technology schools, the service academies in particular, and I was thinking that for an engineering school, 7 math credits (1 Alg I, 1 Alg II, 1 Geom, 1 Pre-Calc, 1 AP Calc I, 1 AP Calc II, and 1 AP Stats) might outweigh the 2 years of a foreign language. I will have 3 foriegn language credits at the end of this year so I have fulfilled the requirement but I am just wondering is it really worth it to take the extra year of German?
