foreign languages

Which one of these three languages (Japanese, German and Italian) would you choose to learn in college, and why?

Japanese seems like the one to go with if you REALLY want a challenge. I've always wanted to learn both Italian and Japanese, so I wouldn't suggest German :-X

What major are you in? If you're in like, international business, maybe it'd be better to take Japanese?

German would probably be the most useful out of those as there is a lot of business done between the United States and Germany. It is also rather easy compared to the others. Italian might be cool if you want to study abroad and maybe live in Italy at some point, it is one of the romantic languages.

I've heard if you are into international business chinese would be very helpful. Chinese translators I've heard get paid alot because it's such a difficult language...

Out of those 3... though unless you are ready for a challange like above person said, I would go for german (or even french although it's not in your list) Japanese would be difficult for english speaker because the order isn't the same at all...

Mmmm German. But I'm biased because I speak German. It's so useful. If you're in Europe are you more likely to find a Polish person speaking Dutch or Greek or English and German? I used my German in every country that I went to, very useful.

German. I'm biased too. It is very useful and is spoken in several European countries or when conducting international business. However I don't think that it is easy to learn than Italian.

Italian is extremely easy. So is German. It really depends on what you want to do. For international relations, either German or Japanese is great. If you want to do anything with art or fashion, go for Italian. German is also good for philosophy.

If you don't already speak Spanish, you should probably take that as well as one of the above languages.

japanese but that's cuz i'm interested in asia.

think about why you want to take the language and what you plan to do with it instead of just which language to pick.

It depends on your major really. If you want to do something related with computers and technology probably japanese, if you're doing anything with mathematics german or russian. A lot of schools hace recommended languages that go along with the departments.

I would say Japanese. While the European economies are not growing at a tremendous pace and the population is in fact shrinking, the economy of Asia (not as much with Japan) is growing at a massive rate as is the population.

If you ever wish to work for the government-definitely, Chinese.
Japanese for business-
German used to be the language for Science -not sure if it is still so.

several language people I've met in the past say no to japanese because the japanese will always speak better english than you will japanese. My dad found this to be very true when he worked with clients from there in the past.

I'd say....Italian. Mainly because I am Italian, but I also just love the way it sounds with Italian people speak.

I would say Italian.

OP, if you need to go to grad school, then ask a prof of your major what language you should study, because some languages do not count for grad school. You know, with regards to the foreign language testing for grad school addy purposes.

Elvenqueen, How many Americans do you know that speak Japanese!? I find that comment to be a bit wierd. Not only that, but alot of people in Japan can't speak english! Why is that, because they live in Japan so they don't find the reason to learn english. The same way alot of Americans feel they don't need the reason to stick to another language because they can speak their mother language (english) instead. Why do you think so many people get better incomes when they can speak another language? I think you should take Japanese because it rocks!!!
