Is it a big deal that I forgot that? Would colleges really view it as a breaking point for my application?

Nah, there’s nothing special about NHS. You could email them if you really wanted to, though.

Depending on the selectivity of the colleges you’re applying to, I certainly think it could help to inform them that you forgot to list it. Being accepted into NHS implies a certain amount of community service/involvement and is certainly an accomplishment to be proud of. Emailing or faxing the correction would be fine I’m sure (though you may want to call/email and ask if they will even consider it as a valid addition). If you correct it before the official deadline I would think they would still consider it though.

There is nothing so overrated as NHS. As the Beloved College Advisor (BCA) said long ago, NHS gets you nothing, it’s what you do to get in NHS that is worth something.

At the core, the problem is each HS sets their own standard for NHS. With no set standard to get in, and it being almost automatic at some HS, to very difficult before senior year at others, the “honor” is virtually meaningless. BCA reports that no college he knows of gives it more than a passing glance, especially the elite ones.

I got into NHS last year and literally did nothing, and they still haven’t kicked me out.

So no, don’t bother.
