I faxed the letter as “undecided” in the morning yesterday. Then a girl left a message said that they received my fax but NM needs to have the name of a school and she could take it over by the phone. So I faxed the letter back with the school name at my work, and then when I got home after work and called the girl back on her direct line which was given in her message. Maybe this was just a special case for us? Sorry if that is not their normal procedure.

The girl said my son is a “strong considered student” for a fully transferable award. so I don’t know if that was reason they needed the name of a school?

^ Yes, GodisLove, you are correct; NM will not award a scholarship without having the name of an accredited college as the student’s first choice in their files.

jotria–it is possible that your D is not being considered for a $2500 or corporate scholarship at this time. However, that doesn’t mean that she is out of the running; I know a student who received notice of his $2500 award the third week in May.

So maybe the letter came because students are being considered right now (in my son’s case, that would be the corporate one)? Hm, guess that makes sense. At any rate, I faxed our form yesterday. I’m just cheap and didn’t want to pay 2.49!

Ack. My child listed “undecided” but has not received this letter. (We are also having issues with our mail delivery.) Is there a quick link somewhere to a list of NMF participating colleges?

^ your child is ok. the letter is just for additional awards. the undecided will not impact what the school provides once s/he makes a choice.

if you still have the booklet from when your child took the PSAT, there is a list of participating schools in there. however, it does not lis the additional goodies that schools provide “off the record”.

The NMF site has the list of officially participating colleges.

^^^
Right, but that list won’t include the “unofficial” NMF scholarships that some colleges give to its NMFs.

The list of College Merit Scholarship Sponsors is in the [NM Student Guide](http://www.nationalmerit.org/student_guide.pdfguide), starting on p.18

But can’t the corporate sponsored scholarship go with a student to any school? It doesn’t have to be a school that has scholarships for NMF, right?

My D received an email today from National Merit:

She is still waiting to hear back from a bunch of colleges, about half of which are NOT National Merit Scholarship sponsors. She is really and truly undecided on a first choice school, and needs to see where she gets accepted and what offers they make her. So she just picked one of the non-sponsoring colleges and submitted that for now. Her choice was sort-of random. (She picked MIT because they have the earliest announcement date and are also one of the reachiest. So if she doesn’t get in, she can switch to one of the remaining choices soonest.)

I really hope she did the right thing!

BTW, she submitted her form as an email attachment (after printing and signing, then scanning it). Should I fax in a copy too, just to be sure?

sbjdorlo–Yes, a corporate-sponsored scholarship can go with the student to any school, as long as it is an accredited college. That college does not have to be one that offers NMF scholarships.

mihcal1,

That’s the letter my son received and he also selected a non-NMS school.

Schokolade, thanks for the reassurance that the corporate would go with him. I know he still has time to change his mind.

So is the thought that the communications described above pertain to the one-time $2500 award?
