I just got off the phone with NMSC. If you have sent them a first choice and want to CHANGE to a different school, you must fax them your choice by the end of today. The woman I spoke with said they would accept them up until 11:30 PM but would prefer it to be earlier. You must fax them your name, address, your 2 ID numbers and the name of the college you are choosing. The fax number is (847) 866-5113. If you would like to speak to a real person about this the phone number is (847) 866-5100.

This is only for students who have already named a first choice college and want to change it. If you are still listed as undecided, I believe you have awhile to name a school.

Yeah, the final date for naming a school for those who are undecided is May 31 (or sooner if your college has an earlier date & you want $$$). We faxed son's form on Monday, 5/17 evening & sent the card in an envelope certified, return receipt requested so he will get the merit award promised by USC.

D did name a first choice, but the paperwork we received says she has to make any change "as soon as college plans are firm". No deadline listed. She's out of town until Saturday evening at a college visit (1st choice) that should finalize her choice.

For the record 1st choice came with financial aid, 2nd choice with nice merit aid. There is a fairly substantial cost difference to us.

Don't understand the contacts you've had. In our case, my child just listed "undecided" initially & has now listed USoCal, where he will be matriculating in the fall. We faxed the card on Monday, 4/17 & sent it certified, return receipt requested on 4/18. Haven't gotten any reply from NM. Sent an e-mail to USoCal advising them of this as well.

If you have questions, I'd suggest you contact NMerit by phone. Their contact info per their webpage is:

Uh-oh - my son didn't change his first choice college, and now has been awarded a $2000 renewable NM at a school he won't be attending. Does that mean he no longer qualifies for the flat $2500?

I have the same problem! I now have a full scholarship to ASU, where I won't be attending. I can't find any information about the $2500, but I know the notification letters were mailed sometime in March. I'm assuming I don't qualify....?

well i'm not too sure about this, but i think that only 2500 $2500 dollar scholarships are awarded, and if you get these, you can't have gotten a college scholarship, vice versa. and, if you've been awarded a college scholarship, you can't get another one. so i guess you guys are out of luck. i don't think i'm the only one who wishes those directions could've been easier...

consideration for scholarships Finalists and who also:
1. report to NMSC that a sponsor college is their first choice (see the list of college sponsors enclosed
with your materials);
2. have applied for admission to the sponsor college; and
3. have not been offered any Merit Scholarship award (corporate-sponsored, National, or another collegesponsored
award). No student will receive more than one scholarship offer from NMSC.
A college-sponsored Merit Scholarship award can be used only at the institution financing it and therefore is canceled if the winner changes college choice.
