Forming A List

Hello, I am currently a junior just beginning to look at colleges. I would like some suggestions for schools to add to my list.

Stats: 3.4 ish GPA UW (incredible upward trend, junior year so far is a 3.9)
Weighted is probably around 4.4.
SAT scores: I have not taken the official test yet but on the practice test at CB website I got a 1940.
I am hoping to raise my math score by 60 points and am working hard towards it.
I don't know how much value that will be to you.
AP's: Only one this year, Lang
Will take Bio and Lit next year.
I am also involved in a dual enrollment program at a local community college. I take a five credit A&P 1 class there and have received very good grades.

My class rank is a little shaky because of a rough freshman year. I would be lucky to graduate in the top half of my class because of the cutthroat atmosphere. My school is a magnet school and out of the roughly 170 kids who auditioned to be in my major for high school, 18 were accepted.
As far as income, money will most likely be an issue. I am looking for schools that offer a lot of scholarship money because need based financial aid will not suffice.

I don't have awards yet other than honor roll, and my EC's are handbell choir, concert choir, lit mag, a part time job at a fast food restaurant, spring track and field, and hopefully Science Olympiad. Last year I participated in a research project on water quality with the state park system in my state. I hope to do the same this year, it was a lot of fun. I also taught at an acting summer camp last summer and plan to this summer as well. That camp gave me over 100 hours of volunteer service.

I am looking for schools with an intellectual atmosphere and focused on science. I would like to live on campus, and I am looking for larger schools.

So far the only school I know for sure I will apply to is UDel(instate).

Any advice/ suggestions?

Thanks!!!

Intended major is biochemistry, by the way, or biology.

It’s a little early and if you see, the forum is busy with Sr’s applying now.

If you are searching for merit it is very important that you really spend your time on prep and get your scores up to increase options. You can browse the SAT prep subforum which has tips pinned to the top, particularly xiggi and silverturtle.

You can also read the financial aid forum and see the threads pinned at the top that list automatic merit schools and lower cost schools. Did you parents tell you how much they can pay a year yet?

I think after you know your SAT you can start your list. Did you take the PSAT?

What are you looking for in a school, other than a strong Bio program? Are you looking at Liberal Arts Schools? Just Research Universities? In large cities, college towns, or the middle of nowhere? Party culture, in between, or none? Extreme liberal (Vassar) or not? Politically active?

Generally, I would suggest taking the first steps by yourself. Have a look around at both LACs and large universities, with not prejudices. I suggest google-ing “school name stereotypes.” Generally, stereotypes, although not completely accurate, do give some sense of the atmosphere.

hendrix college is the school for you!
