The sooner the better, I’m sick of waiting haha. Were you a transfer student?
@Guhlio I check everyday too @Chamorro671 Thanks for sharing! Do you mean the notification period in June? Wouldn’t notification from Foster come earlier?
@Guhlio Yes, I transferred for Autumn 2014. I’m finishing up my first year at Foster.
@amorefidefoveat Yes, you’re right. I meant I received my acceptance notifications in early May. It’s such a huge advantage being one of the first to know you’ve been admitted. Once you’re admitted to Foster, you’re automatically admitted to UW and you get first choice when you pick your orientation dates. I urge everyone to choose the first orientation date available because business classes fill up FAST. lol
@Chamorro671 Definitely hoping I can expect a decision from them at the beginning of May too! This is too much suspense… I wonder if it also matters when you submitted your application. Do you remember if you submitted way before the deadline or even anywhere near it?
@amorefidefoveat I submitted the application two days before the deadline, so it wasn’t way before. I think they just release everything at once because all the students at my college, who applied to Foster, received letters the same morning. I’m not sure if everyone’s unofficial transcript loads at the same time though. My friend refuses to check anymore because it gets him too nervous lol So I’m counting on you guys, my future classmates here on CC, to keep me updated. :-??
My financial aid status has updated to processing. I am hoping this is a good sign.
@Chamorro671 Ahh I’ll continue my routine checks still @SB5556 Hmm that could be an indication… Mind I ask you guys what are your WSA scores???
@SB5556 Mine also updated to processing yesterday.
@amorefidefoveat I am still waiting on my WSA score. I took it at the end of March.
@SB5556 Ouh. I guess most people who have taken it in March are more than likely to receive the scores together with the decision email huh… Today marks the end of April. Tomorrow onwards there could be news from the uw students who applied to foster and then not long later for the cc transfers… Let’s keep each other updated of any minor or major changes please!(:
In years past, the UW natives in Washington received their notification, the first Tuesday in May. It would make sense that they always send them out on a Monday, to ensure their are’t any applicants who have a delay because of mail not being delivered on the weekend.Insert brace yourself Meme
Hopefully the transfer applications will come later this week. Last year they came on the 13th (The second Tuesday of my) based on this pattern, transfer student near Seattle should check the mail on the 12th.
@SB5556 Thanks for finding that out. I started looking into exact dates on past threads once I read your post, and it looks like (with consistency) UW natives can load their un-offical transcript the first Friday of the month, and receive letters the following Tuesday (which is almost always the first Tuesday). Then transfers can load their unofficial transcript the second Friday of the month, and receive letters the following Tuesday as you said. This only pertains to Business transfers.
2012-2014 all follow this pattern, except in 2013 Foster transfers got an email the second friday saying they were accepted, contingent on being accepted to UW. Either way it looks like Foster transfers should find out either by email or unofficial transcript this Friday the 8th.
@Chamorro671 Hey don’t know if you are still checking this thread, but how is the difficulty compared to CC business courses, or just compared to CC in general? Also, do the teachers grade on curves?
The classes are definitely more challenging mainly because the teachers do grade on curves and the mean/median GPA is set at a 3.1-3.3. Plus your classmates are already the best of the best so the average on tests are usually high…not going to lie, it’s really hard to get A’s or 3.6-4.0 . But I also work close to full-time and I’m involved on campus so it may be different for others. But to put things into perspective, I had a 3.9 in CC and now I have a 3.53. (You start from scratch once you transfer)… 90% of your classes will have a collaborative project(s). These projects/presentations can sneak up on you while you’re preparing for so many things. With that said, don’t be discouraged. As business students, you should be accustomed to challenges. Plus, it’s hard to fail as long as you do all of the assigned work and study regularly. I would advise everyone to balance your schedule… When you come to Foster, you may want to take all business classes (I’m guilty of this) but remember you have non-business classes to take where you can take relatively easy non-curved classes.
Overall, it’s a lot more challenging than CC but even more rewarding!
I worked full time while doing CC and got a 3.84 but will be either transitioning to part time or finding a new part time job so I can focus on school come Fall (assuming I get in). I’m not worried about getting bad grades, but I am worried about not continuing to get mostly A’s because I want to get into consulting. It will be nice being with students who are the best of the best as you say, because in CC it seemed like no one cared and group projects became a nightmare. I’ve never been graded on a curve before, can you explain how that works with the assumption that the mean/median is 3.1-3.3 as you said? Also you said there are a lot of presentations, so are the classes a lot smaller than the typical giant UW pre-req courses. Thanks for the info!
@Guhlio If you have the resources, transitioning to part-time is an excellent idea! It will give you a lot of time to network and focus on your core classes. Don’t worry too much about not getting mostly A’s. Your application stats look similar to mine. If I can pull off a 3.5+ with my work schedule, I’m sure you’ll be able to do better. Just a heads up, the big consulting firms come to recruit around Autumn/Winter, so talk to a Foster career advisor early!
As for the curve, it basically means that the average (mean/median) student will receive a 3.1-3.3. In most cases, professors will allot the top 10% of the class a 3.8-4.0, the second 10% a 3.4-3.7 and so on… Core classes are usually around 60-80 students which means only the top 6-8 students will receive a 3.8-4.0. It gets out of hand when the average grade in the class is a 90% because then what seems like an “A” would turn out to be a low “B”. Some professors try to counter this by offering extremely difficult or tricky exams, but even then, it’s still a curve. It really comes down to how much effort you’re willing to put in and managing your time wisely. Oh and sometimes the difference maker is participation points! The majority of your professors will allot 5%-10% of your grade to participation and it seems like it’s not a big deal, but it really makes a difference, I promise. So talk your butt off in class, go to office hours, do anything you can to make your professor notice you.
And yes, classes in Foster are relatively small. As mentioned, your core classes are around 60-80 students and sometimes your concentration classes are smaller at around 40-50 students. It’s pretty sweet!
@Chamorro671 Dang that grading system seems kinda harsh haha. I’ll make sure to talk to an advisor right away. I’m so nervous about not getting in now haha. I wish these transcripts would start loading!
@Guhlio The grading system is definitely different, but it’s not terrible. Your non-business classes tend to balance out your GPA. Just participate as much as you can, and that should boost your grades. Don’t beat yourself over the first quarter if you don’t do as well as you want because adjusting is a barrier for many transfer students.
I’m pretty sure you’re in, man. With the short admissions period, I’m sure they stream-line the process through some matrix that directly admits most of their students. You are most likely one of them. From speculation, if you have a 3.6+ Overall GPA, a 3.7+ Pre-App GPA, and a 4+ WSA, then you’re most likely in (speaking for Autumn Quarter).
@Chamorro671 That’s good, ya I read about admitting 80% of students off of their stats, then the rest are holistically reviewed beyond that point.
As far as the consulting firms coming in Fall/Winter; is it going to matter that I won’t have a ton of UW credits at that point? I’ll have high GPA Community College transcripts but I feel like they would look down on those. I guess this question would apply to any recruiters coming, and the consequence of being a transfer student.
Yeah, that’s definitely an issue I discovered. I would talk to someone in the career center sometime around the time you get your letter. Particularly, my issue was that I wanted to get involved with campus organizations and on their applications, they request UW GPA and former UW campus involvement information. Once I explained my situation, all of them were willing to consider my CC GPA and involvement. So who knows, it could go equally well with the recruiters.
In the mean time, there are plenty of Foster organizations where you could get involved and boost your resume. Some of these organizations have connections with big local companies and specific departments that are looking to hire interns too. Talk to your professors too because many of them have tons of experience networking and working with big companies. There are so many avenues to get where you want to be.
