how "big" or influential is being a founder and president of a club on the college application? btw its a table tennis club

It depends on the club. Colleges know that lots of clubs are activities in name only: done only to add depth to someone's resume.

If you start a club that really does things -- raises money, provides community service, hosts speakers or trainers, participates in out of school tournaments, hosts tournaments -- that could be an impressive EC.

Also, relatively few colleges weigh ECs as part of the admissions process. To find out how much ECs count, either look up the college's common data set, which may be pinned to the top of this or the other admission board on CC or pay $14.95 for full access to the US News Premium college web site and look up detailed info about admissions factors at the colleges you're applying to.

Like NSM said, it depends. If you're starting it just to look good for colleges, then it probably won't help you. If you're starting it because you are passionate about whatever you're trying to start (table tennis), then it'll probably show through the rest of your application. In that case, your founding of a club will demonstrate initiative.

By the way, I'm also in the process of starting a table tennis club at the school. I've been playing competitively for a while though.
