fraternities and sororities

I've read all the old info on greek life at UCLA but it all seems generic and...OLD. I've heard there has been a lot of change in the houses as far as personalities and existence(lots of probation).

Could anyone who is involved in greek life give their opinions on UCLA fraternities and sororities including info on rush, parties, personality of houses, activities... Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not looking for the typical "sororities are full of fake, rich girls" and "frats are for stuck up, player guys" because I don't think that's true at UCLA.

I'm interested in the traditional fraternities and sororities, not the ethnic or special interest ones.

Thanks!

I talked to a guy at UCLA a few weeks a go and he mentioned ZBT.

Rush during rush week, see what it’s like. There will always be the bro-ing and you have to keep your head clear of the broboganda but you’ll know if it’s for you. See a bunch of houses and try make sure you take note of your pledge brothers, those are your peers for the ride through. That’s my 2 cents from a non-greek student. You’ll be hard pressed to find relevant info on this board, I’ve got awesome friends from the frats, but they’re not all like that.

^hahaha broboganda. I like the way you phrased that haha.

how are the sororities here??? i can’t decide whether or not to rush.

i’ve been in a sorority here for 3 years and have only great things to say about it. besides all of the fun stuff that i’m sure you’ve heard about, the girls i’ve met are extremely smart, driven, and involved in activities other than greek life. even if you aren’t sure about joining, it’s a good idea to go through rush to meet people and get an idea of what greek life consists of… let me know if you have any other questions about it!

which sorority are u in and which are the best ones (aside from yours)?

not gonna say which one i’m in

there’s not really a point in saying which ones are good/bad either, as people always argue over who are “top houses” and who are “bottom.” i can say, however, that there are cool/smart/friendly/cute girls in every house…

I’m just wondering, what exactly does one do in a sorority/fraternity? All I ever hear about is partying.

philanthropy events – each house puts on at least one charity event a year (as well as attending everyone else’s events), but they also attend other non-greek philanthropies like relay for life and dance marathon.

academic – almost all houses have test files to reference when studying. also, a lot of chapters do “mentor” programs where you’re paired up with someone older in your major to get advice about classes and internships. another thing greek life is great for is networking- besides getting constant job offer e-mails from chapter alums, panhellenic/ifc often host networking nights. most houses also have libraries or study rooms.

besides that, there’s all of the other fun stuff frats and sororities do together-- beach trips, marathons, tv tapings, concerts, etc. i know a lot of people tend to think of partying when they think of greek life, but that’s just because it’s the stereotype. maybe it’s just because we’re at ucla, but i don’t think greek life here is THAT focused on parties compared to other schools. check it out and see for yourself, there’s really a lot of great stuff to get out of it

Is it weird how the fraternities and sororities are on opposite sides of the campus?
Where to they go to hang out with eachother?

philanthropies are generally on campus, and exchanges (parties) are either at the frat houses or they’re bussed to a venue off campus. guys usually don’t hang out at sororities, unless it’s around lunch time and they’re over for some free lunch (:

Hrm, Bruinsarerad, does that make you a fourth year then? I’m trying to think if I know you.

word on ZBT??

yep, im a 4th year.

ZBT has some cool guys. but so do a lot of frats. when girls rush they HAVE to visit every house, but guys can rush whichever houses they’d like. on one hand, it makes guys rush a lot less stressful, but on the other hand, a lot of times they’ll miss out on a house that would have been a great fit. so while ZBT is a good house, there are a LOT of good houses you should check out…

i dont know what houses to check out b/c every house tells me they’re the best!!??!

just check out as many of them as you can! you guys get free food and stuff haha yay

i guess i can shed some light on stereotypes for frats and sororities though. some of the “top houses” are sae, zbt, sig nu, sig ep, phi psi, and sig chi. i heard a LOT about zbt this past year; they seem to be definitely increasing their reputation. i had a few pretty unenjoyable experiences there at first so i didn’t really like going there but have recently become better friends with some of the guys, and they’re really nice. sae i don’t know much about, only been there once, but they’re known as s gay e by other frats. supposed to have attractive guys though. sig nu is pretty fun, they have electronic dance parties quite often. my two closest friends in there are hilarious and quite the stoners, but not everyone is like that. sig chi guys are i think known as athletic white guys, they’re pretty nice, but i don’t think they can recruit new pledges cause of their probation. never been to sig ep or phi psi. theta xi and dtd i would classify as the nice guys. i actually would prefer to hang out with those guys simply because i feel like i could hang out with them outside of just parties. unfortunately dtd lost its house, so i dunno how they’re gonna deal with that, but they have a lot of smart, fun guys. theta xi i think pride themselves on being classy, and they have a nice heated pool in their backyard. aepi is the jewish frat and has some nice guys, some shady guys, i don’t really know them that well but i have friends who’ve had mixed experience. sig pi is a major stoner/druggie frat, but other than that, chill and laid back. theta chi is kinda kinda…strange, in my opinion. beta is known as beta date-a rape-a, but i’m sure there are some nice guys there. pike is also avoided by some…i know one really ******y guy in pike, but also one super sweet guy, so i guess it depends. i don’t know much about the others, like delta sig and if there’s anything else i’m missing.

in general, every frat has its nice guys and its ***bags. what i’ve noticed is the younger they are, the less ***y they tend to be, because they haven’t really become true cocky frat guys yet. obviously, this isn’t true for everyone, but yeah.

as for sororities…i don’t really know much as i’m not in one, but i do think that if i joined one, i wouldn’t necessarily go for the top ones because i think you can find a lot of more genuine girls in the “lower ones”. that said, the top ones are alpha phi, theta, and kappa gamma. they’re all basically supposed to be the pretty girls, but to be honest, i think pi phi’s have been getting a lot hotter recently. i’ve heard that dg’s are really dramatic, and pi phi’s are a frat favorite because they love to party. chi o seems to be really nice and also pretty. i know a lot of really sweet girls in kd and gamma phi, which are considered to be on the lower half, but it really doesn’t matter. i don’t know much about the others. choose the sorority that fits you best. you’ll visit every house and then hopefully be able to see which one you like the most!

haha pi phi aren’t just a frat favorite, but I’ll save that for another day. Btw, hellohelloduh, did you end up joining the club team/making it out to midnight? I haven’t been in ages since I’ve been pretty busy with school and all.

ZBT also used to have the rep ‘zeta beta rape ya’, but to be honest, like it has been said, there’s always a mix of guys. Meet them and you’ll see. If you’re a girl, just be smart about going to frats/partying especially when you’re jumping in to the nee ‘college’ thing. It’s a damn fun time, but having friends look out for you (whether in the frat itself or just going out with you) is never a bad policy. /end mom-ologue

what do u mean pi phi arent just a frat favorite

It will be really hard to get any useful info here as this subject is very subjective. The houses, frats and sororities, all have pros and cons. If you are interested in greek life there will be a place for you. Just as you have to find a college that is a good “fit” you have to find a house that is a good “fit”. What feels right for someone else might not be right for you. Some of the stereotypes might be true but all in all sorority houses have very high gpas, are involved in charity work, career building workshops, friendship and partying. To ask about a specific house is pointless as every house is only defined but the CURRENT members and the CURRENT members CHANGE every year. So you must understand that the make up or reputation of a house is a fluid and changing thing.

Some frats/houses are more for specific majors or minorities and some are service oriented. You best bet is to go to the greek life website for UCLA and read up on all the chapters to learn more about them all. Then during rush visit every house you can and make up your own mind as to whether being in a greek org. is for you.
