can someone please elaborate on the greek scene at UCLA? how are the fraternities? is there anyone currenly in one? how is hazing there? thanks

From a mother of a UCLA grad and sorority member---lots of social partying, too much drinking, good way to meet lots of people. My D met her husband there---great guy too. I'll have to ask him about hazing. They both made lifelong friends there---active alums.

thanks for the great response. can anyone who is in a fraternity offer any input? thanks

not really anyone hazing per se...more physical work and mental . if you like to party, then you better join a fraternity or know people in apartments. otherwise, youll be trying to get in and get denied. you need greek life for an active social life here unless you have a a fake or know someone that does. also, the top three fraternities here from what I believe and what I have been told, are SAE, Sig Nu, and Phi Psi. However, SAE is full of a bunch of up-tight arrogant *es, sig nu parties hella, and phi psi makes their pledges do stupid **. however, i recomend during rush you just go to all the houses and see where you belong. hope that helped.

well i'm in a sorority and from what i hear from my sisters they like SAE, Phi Psi, and Pike the best... but that's only one sorority so i'm sure it varies

Rush Pike ;)

pretty sure all nationals publicy have no hazing policies, but some of them still do it. sigma pi does hell week for example (my buddy pledged tho and said it wasnt anything unbearable and he's a wuss).

yeah if you're a guy and social life/partying/drinking is a huge priority of yours, it's harder to be in on all of it unless you're in a frat know a bunch of guys in frats. Girls have less of a problem.

hmm greek life, as with any other thing at this school, is totally what you make of it. i rushed, but didn't end up accepting a bid to a sorority. not because I didn't like the sorority, but because I wasn't positive about joining one in the first place and I actually liked keeping the school big and open esp. my first quarter, before limiting myself and committing to something so soon. it's definitely a good way to meet people (even just by rushing you meet tons of people) and make a big school smaller...and it really is your choice as to how much time you want to put in, how much partying you'd want to do, how involved you'd like to be etc...etc... i personally think it's too expensive to be in one unless you plan on LIVING in a house, then it's actually cheaper than the dorms and meals are included. Lots of my friends are in sororities and are quite happy, but don't feel like it's the only way you can meet people or do fun stuff. There are a gazillion things on campus you can explore and be involved with.

I apologize for the self-plug but I recently wrote an article about sorority rush at one of the UCLA sororities (cannot say which one) and I thought you might find it interesting.

Eh, that article was a load of crap. Don't let one person change your perceptions about the greek system. Go out and see for yourself.

I don't know if it speaks to all sororities but it does to one of the ones at UCLA.

I agree with agentmichi.

Curious, was the sorority Kappa Delta?

Three of the eleven Panhellenic sororities are mentioned. One of them, however, is the focus of the article. I am not going to reveal which one on this message board though.

Just for the record even though I don't ever plan on joining one. My favorite sororities are Pi Beta Phi and Delta Delta Delta. :)
