Can anyone give me an estimate of how much expenses are in a frat house? I am trying to get a sense of how much dues and other expenses will be.

There is info. regarding this on the W&L home page, under the Greek Life section and also in the housing section. The housing section says that average fraternity fees are $5400 a year. Sororities are much lower.

[This will help.](http://www.wlu.edu/documents/Greek%20Life/Fraternity%20Financial%20Obligations%2011-12(0).pdf)

You should keep in mind that those are this years’ costs and the first year dues are actually from the year before that because that chart is published at the beginning of the year before the fraternities actually assess their freshmen’s dues. The general trend seems to be upward so I would guess it will be a few hundred more than that, certainly for the first year costs. It’s pretty steep to be in a fraternity here but the IFC offers a few scholarships for around $1,400 I think and some fraternities also give some of their brothers “scholarships” and whatnot.

You should also look at how much room and board cost in the fraternities because most fraternities expect their sophomores to live in the house and some require meal plans every year after freshman year. That being said I think it’s a great investment and even though the most common reason people give for being greek seems to be that “it seems to be the thing to do” it builds great connections and relationships so you can really look at it as an investment. Plus fraternities will invest a lot of money in you if you are a guy during the fall term for rush.

You should also be aware that the billing is done through the school so if your parents pay your tuition they will at the least see your fraternity bill, you can’t just slide the president a check or anything like that.
