Our S is accepted at High Point, but we are suddenly having 2nd thoughts, as we just read they are being sued for a fraternity hazing death! Does anyone have information about this case, the article made it sound like the situation with drugs and alcohol is out of control and campus security isn't allowed to interfere.

My S was accepted as well and I heard about the lawsuit. I asked his admissions counselor about the university’s response to the incident. She was able to say the incident occurred at an off campus site and that the fraternity has been banned from campus. There is a no hazing policy in place as well. She could not say much more than that and actually seemed surprised that I had seen it mentioned on- line. Hope that helps.

Hello suemag, we asked the admissions counselor and she told us essentially the same as was told to you, except she didn’t mention the fraternity being banned. The article I read said the fraternity pledge master was actually President Qbein’s son, though realize not everything in the paper is necessary true! Our S is now leaning away from High Point though this is not the only reason.

I pushed pretty hard for some answers. And yes, it was the President’s son who was involved

There was another article in the paper that said the national fraternity shut down the chapter at High Point, so it seems the university did not ban it, the decision was made by others. Just my opinion, but that really bothers me if the President’s son was involved and they did nothing.

wow… a little scary that an admissions officer tried to shuffle this off and acted like it was not big news and “surprised” that the death of a college student due to hazing would be news worthy… this controlled thinking of all on campus is one of the big concerns I had when visiting High Point as a whole.

These articles should help clear things up. I am a student at HPU and the whole thing has been very quiet. This happened two years ago, and many people are just hearing the full details. I heard about his death and knew his parents were suing, but I didn’t know the suit alleged that “(Michael) Qubein took possession and deleted text messages from Tipton’s phone in an effort to cover up the horrific conduct,” until I read the article. I don’t know enough about the case to talk about it. I also don’t want to disrespect his family or his memory by spreading rumors.

The fraternity mentioned has been removed from campus by their national office, not the school. This isn’t the first time they’ve been in trouble. This year one of their members was arrested for dealing drugs out of their on campus house. And a couple years ago, they were also in trouble with cocaine possession.

However, most fraternities and sororities are not like this at High Point, especially the ones that are currently on campus. Just like everything else at any other school, your son needs to be careful about the friends he chooses to hang out with. This isn’t a problem specific to High Point or Greek Life at High Point. These things happen at every school across the country.

Thanks eyesopen ! I agree with your assessment that this type of behavior happens at every school across the country. Choose your friends wisely!

it does happen from time to time across the country… I’m guessing it’s hitting the news more now that the law suit has been filed? So strange… there was a hazing death in New York State about a year ago… It has been all over the New York News and papers for months… I wonder why this was never really reported on??? It’s so scary to me that this happened right around the time my D was visiting campus and considering the school yet not a word of it and they were still building the greek village. The NY one also happened “off campus” of the small college the students attended still it was front and center as a huge deal.

The article that was linked says it wasn’t reported because the ME ruled the death to be due to a drug overdose unrelated to any hazing.

Even more interesting that my D just flew back home after spending all day Monday at the open house and not one word was mentioned — in fact, the opposite: the best security, less than 30% Greek life, NO hazing, pledge week not until 2nd semester, and on and on, including a comment from Dr Qubein that his own children show the utmost respect. At the same time, a judge was ruling that the court documents would NOT be sealed …

Although I believe in our court system and understand all are innocent until proven otherwise, I’m a bit uncomfortable. Meanwhile, my D is in love with the entire set-up at HPU

My D is a jr now at HPU. She’s often mentioned how “strict” she thought security is, so I wasn’t surprised that the university was dismissed from the lawsuit. It is tragic because the alleged behavior doesn’t match up with the medical examiner findings. Hopefully all will find peace.
