Fraternity reputations at Tufts

Can any current or (recently) former Tufts students comment on the reputations of different fraternities at Tufts? I understand that every member of every fraternity is unique and I know that I shouldnt stereotype, but still, fraternities as a whole have reputations, and before going to school in a couple weeks, I would like to know these fraternities.

For example, fraternity ______ is known for throwing wild parties. _______ is nerdy. _______ is the frat for the athletes. You get the picture. Any help would be appreciated!

Hey there. I’m going to Tufts in the fall also. I don’t have an answer for you (sorry), but from what I hear around, the fraternities are pretty low key. I always here the, “they’re there if you want them, but they’re not something to really consider otherwise.” I’m with you. I’d prefer less action than more, and I think that’s what Tufts has. Time shall tell though.

It’s probably a bit late for this since rush is already underway, but here’s my two cents (coming from a non-affiliated senior guy who has seen these frats change over the years)

TOP TIER

Theta Delta Chi (123) - One of the nicer houses on campus, at least from the outside. Inside, not so much, though still above average. Pretty exclusive, but fun parties. Reputation: Rich, somewhat douchy, but a lot of fun. Not affiliated with any sports team.

Delta Tau Delta (DTD) - Really nice house, really popular with the ladies, really fun (though very exclusive, ticketed) parties. Reputation: wealthy but down to earth prep school kids (but not the druggy ones- they’re in sig nu). Not affiliated with any sports team, though there seem to be a lot of skiers and rowers.

Alpha Tau Omega (ATO) - Coed fraternity (frorority, as some call it) with really wild theme parties, which are some of the most fun on campus. Nice house and generally nice people. Reputation: swimmers who like to throw down. Affiliated almost exclusively with watersports- swimming, diving, rowing, and sailing.

MIDDLE TIER

Zeta Psi - Definitely the top of the middle tier. They throw parties almost every Saturday night, and if you get there early enough you can get in even as a freshman. Pretty run-down house, and the dance floor gets kind of sleazy. Reputation: black light parties, cheap but ever-flowing beer. Affiliated primarily with soccer and squash, though many members are not athletes.

Alpha Epsilon Pi (AEPi) - One of two historically Jewish fraternities, along with ZBT, though AEPi is less overwhelmingly Jewish at Tufts than nationally, ironically enough. They don’t throw parties too often, but when they do, they’re good. House is nice, though kind of isolated from the rest of the Greeks. Reputation: the better Jewish guys.

Delta Upsilon (DU) - This one could honestly go in any of the three categories depending on who you ask. Wild parties theme (though not this fall), which have sometimes led to accusations of assault. Really run-down house, and very “bro” guys. The most “Southern” frat, as compared to DTD being “New England”. Affiliated primarily with football, baseball, though they are trying to change that.

Theta Chi - One of the more forgotten fraternities, but still a decent one. Really casual, and somewhat run-down house, affectionately called the Big Red Barn. Fun, low-key dance parties in their basement. Reputation: nice, but kind of boring guys. Affiliated primarily with FOCUS preorientation.

BOTTOM TIER

Zeta Beta Tau (ZBT) - Charming little house on Packard Ave. They throw parties occasionally, but they are usually sausage fests, and they’re punch is always weird. Reputation: the not as great Jewish guys.

Sigma Nu (Sig Nu) - One of the best locations, but one of the absolute worst houses. The guys are the typical ******s you picture graduating from elite prep schools, with drugs and all. I don’t believe they’ve ever thrown an open party, but even on Monday nights, you can definitely smell weed coming from there. Reputation: VERY druggy.

Sigma Phi Epsilon (Sig Ep) - It’s hard to argue Sig Ep being placed at the bottom of the rankings, simply because they were kicked out of their house in May 2011. However, DTD was out of their house for a while, and came back on campus really strongly, so it will be interesting to see how Sig Ep recovers. Reputation: “I didn’t know we had sig ep on campus…”

Can you comment on the reputations of the sororities?

Those rankings are pretty accurate but here are a few other points
-DU is extremely insular
-SigEp has some fantastic brothers and will immediately shoot above Zeta in these “rankings” once they get their house back.
-Say what you want about Sig Nu but there are some really good people in there
-I was surprised to see ATO in the top tier because I don’t think they spring to mind at first but based on my experience I absolutely agree

about tufts fraternities in general:
the percentage of the student body in greek life may be small (iirc it’s around 15-20%?) but if you are involved it is extremely active. It’s easy to be very involved in greek life but also in many other groups/teams.

ChiO (lovely ladies)>APhi (evil but sexy)>AOPi (who?)
