If wikipedia doesn't suffice, here's my overview:

Each fraternity differs in "what they are about". Usually they are about meeting new people, volunteering, and/or partying and other social events. The best way to find out which one fits you, if one does indeed fit you, is to sign up for rush. You can usually do this your school's greeklife website. Once you sign up fraternitys will contact you to come and meet some of the guys, go to some parties, or go to other events during the summer and before rush week. When rush week comes around, they host events that will help you furthermore in deciding which fraternity is right for you (such as parties, BBQ, poker nights, etc.). From what I've seen, hazing really doesnt occur too much. The new form of hazing is doing dirty work which may or may not happen to you. The "tests" you may receive are usually just on the history and facts of the fraternity, or rules.

If you're seriously considering rushing, take everything you see here with a huge grain of salt. Especially that ^^^.

Hazing still occurs in some fraternities. No idea what percentage but it does still occur.
