Bump... I really do have something to worry about

My Brown common app says downloaded but the supplement still says submitted. So yeah, probably just different times...

Faelivrin: If commonapp.org allowed you to submit it and didn't bounce you with a "deadline has passed" message, you're probably fine. I really wouldn't worry, although it wouldn't hurt to call U.Penn tomorrow (or just watch to see if your application is downloaded, in which case you're almost certainly golden).

I hope you don't have plans for tomorrow morning; sounds like you need to sleep in.

I think if we submit our application my 01/01/2009 in any part of the world, we should technically be alright. And in the +GMT-12:International Dateline West time zone, it's still 9:08PM on January 1, 2009.

Sorry, I'm so tired!

Don't count on this. Here's what it says in the Common App Support Center

All Application FAQs > Application Information >
Will my application be accepted if I do not reside in the Eastern time zone?
All application deadlines are as of 11:59pm ET on the stated deadline day. The Common Application records all dates (deadlines, form submission dates, payment dates) in Eastern Time. Schools not located in the eastern time zone may choose to extend their application deadlines to the end of a deadline day in their local time zone, or may accept your documents up until the posted deadline in their local time zone (even though your submission time stamp will be recorded in Eastern Time.) For example, a school located in California may accept your application until 2:59am Eastern Time, which is equivalent to 11:59pm Pacific Time. Since this is on a school-by-school basis and this is not information that may not be available to you, we recommend you submit based on the Eastern Time deadline. Most colleges will accept the submission if it is within a reasonable time period around their deadline.

Besides, people who live on Baker Island (+GMT -12) would submit their applications on THEIR 01/01/2009, which doesn't end for another 3 hours. So the common application should only close after those people finish submitting their applications too, thus giving us extra time.

Well I was reading threads on College apps last year and lots of students applied in Baker Island time. And it was still fine. So it should be ok. I hope :(

But if my common app and supplement have a downloaded status, I should be ok right? :S

First the bad news.
Besides, people who live on Baker Island (+GMT -12) would submit their applications on THEIR 01/01/2009, which doesn't end for another 3 hours. So the common application should only close after those people finish submitting their applications too, thus giving us extra time.
Eeeeeh... The way you think it should work is not necessarily the way it will work. A Web site has no 100% reliable way of determining what time zone you're in, so there has to be a set time regardless of the user's time zone. And by the design of commonapp.org, it's up to each college to decide what its actual deadline (beyond which applications cannot be submitted without special permission from the college) will be. So the way you'd like it to be just isn't the way it is.

Now the good news.
But if my common app and supplement have a downloaded status, I should be ok right? :S
Yes.

OH THANK GOD. And you geek_mom, of course :)

Thanks, geek_mom, for your support. We were all upset last night and now we have another problem. My son submitted the wrong version of his common app to Duke, (due today) because he was panicking about getting the rest of the stuff in. Basically he was switching around essay questions depending on the school, and had an essay on the common app that was already on his submitted Duke supplement. :(
He was going to call them this morning but it has already been downloaded. sigh
Any suggestions?

Just talk to them directly and they'll give appropriate directions on how to get the proper essay in. You'll be fine.

So, I submitted Penn and Stanford when it was still 1/1 in Pacific Time...they're both still at "Submitted" status, so I'll have to wait and see. Hopefully at least Stanford will accept my application (as a CA school), and perhaps Penn will randomly be lenient as well. I'll call them once the offices are back from break and see what they say.

jeli: What sumzup said. He should be able to just fax or email another essay to take the place of the redundant one.

sumzup: From what I read in the commonapp.org FAQ, it sounds like if commonapp.org allowed you to submit, you made it. Every college defines its own "grace period." They don't make those known to you and me. But after the grace period, the Web site bounces your application and tells you it's too late. So if you didn't get bounced, it's not random lenience; it's part of the college's plan. I'd imagine yours will be downloaded manually on Monday. Please post back and let us know your experience.

Great News! :) My son called Duke and they said the deadline was pushed to 1/4, not 1/2, and that he could mail in the corrected application with the cover letter. Thanks for the advice! Don't know if it'll make much difference in the long run, but it's worth a try.

Woo-HOO! That is great news! After that sucker is mailed, give your son a big hug and tell him to get some sleep or go outside and play in the snow/sun/whatever for a while. And you too! ;) Good luck to him on his app decisions!

geek_mom: I'll be sure to come back to this thread and tell you what happened. And yes, it does seem that if it lets you submit, you're alright; I know that other people have received a "bounce" saying that they're submitting past the deadline, so this implies that if it's accepted (even past what appears to be the deadline), it's okay. (Thanks for your general presence in this forum and advice regarding deadlines; I was slightly nervous but now I'm pretty confident my applications went through alright.)

Colleges dont care if its a 5 minutes late, or even an hour. They just have to pretend to care.

yeah, i realized this the other day
colleges want you if you're well qualified
they won't disqualify you on a technicality or a few minutes... how many changes could you really make in 5 minutes?

My Penn and Stanford apps were downloaded, so all is well. The bottom line is that if you can submit, you're good.
