(Freaking out) What schools should I apply to!?

So I get my SAT scores back tomorrow and I'm expecting a 2000-2100.(At 1910 from previous test) but my GPA is an 86.5 WEIGHTED. I know; terrible. I have a really amazing essay and strong EC's.

So far I applied early to Binghamton, and I plan on applying to Penn State, Northeastern, Boston University, Stony Brook, Albany, and Molloy(mother teaches here so I go for free)

My parents/councilor want me to pick a few more schools, especially some safeties, so what do you guys' recommend? Thank you SO much in advance.

Preferably in the Northeast.

… My guess is that you’ve been deluged with mail from many colleges that have been trying to sell themselves. In many cases (not all) you’ve gotten this mail or email because there is something about your profile where the college thinks it’s a match, if you check the admissions statistics for a number of these schools, you’ll probably find a good safety school there (both academic and economic). If the school offers merit money that you’re likely to qualify for – so much the better!!!

A nice thing about this, is it may make the “Why do you want to go to XXXXXX” Essay a bit easier. You can always say that you first became interested in the school because of the literature they had sent you (which has the advantage of being true) and after researching it, you felt that they would be a good fit for you (also a true statement!!).

Otherwise – UVM and possibly Maine come to mind as possibilities (I mention these, since you seem to be looking mainly at state schools).

Well if it’s a New York state school I can go very cheap.(like 7000 a year for bing) but out of state will still be more expensive.

Thanks for those, any more?

My recollection is that the SUNY system’s schools have a very wide range of selectivity criteria – There should be another safety or two there.

you should also look into what kind of size, environment, etc that you want! the admissions process will be much more fulfilling if you search for colleges that you want to attend, rather than colleges that you think you have a good chance of being accepted into.

I’d definitely pick a couple of safetys - if SUNY schools work best consider Albany, Buffalo, New Paltz.

How much can your family afford? Does your mom get a discount at colleges based on her employment? Right now you would probably be full pay at Penn State. The CUNYs should be safeties. What do you want to major in?

Look into Buffalo or New Paltz for SUNYs, as well as Oneonta (I know a lot of people who are very happy there, but it’s not for everyone). CUNYs should be a safe bet as well.

pitt
temple

What are your parents saying about budget?

you’d be full pay OOS high costs for Penn State. Are your parents willing to pay for that?

Also as a side note- I assume you will be dorming at SUNY schools, since the ones you picked are so far from one another- just know that SUNY tuition is not 7k a year; it’s 10k and with housing it’s about 21k so keep that in mind.

A safety could be SUNY Cortland, I second New Paltz, and Oneonta- I have visited them all if you want some input.

Another school that may be a financial safety (bc of SAT) is Mercy College in Dobbs Ferry; (This could also be an academic safety)

Also, Check out Sage Colleges of Albany (Russell Sage too- if you are a girl), and the College of Saint Rose. I don’t know what you want to major in. If you want info on any of the above mentioned schools I’d Be happy to help.

If you live near Molloy College (since mom works there), then SUNY Bing is too far for you to commute, therefore the cost will be much higher than $7k (even the tuition is more than that). The COA for an instate student is well over $20k per year.

I understand the costs, and that won’t be a factor, although less is always more I guess.

Right now my list is…
Binghamton(EA)(21k)
Stony Brook(21k)
Albany(21k)
Molloy(Free+13k for room, although I could live at home)
Penn State(43k)
Northeastern(54k)
Boston University(57k)
Brandeis(57k)
Cornell(Brother/sister legacy)(33k if state side)
and Carnegie mellon(57k)

Prices of schools including room and board for my use^

I also just got my SAT scores back. 2060 superscored. 700CR/670M/690W. Like I said, an absolutely amazing essay / good EC’s.

Could anyone give me a couple more match/reach schools?

Well, what are you looking for?
