Help me decide which colleges toapply to!

Hello! So summer is coming and I would like to start my applications especially since I enrolled into a program where we fill out college applications, do essays, etc during the summer at my school. Before I take that I would like to know which colleges I will be applying to in order to fill out the applications.

Freshman Year: Horrible grades because I didn't care about college or school. Not motivated at all. I never studied or opened up a book.
Geometry: 89
Global History I: 91
English: 86
Advanced Physical Science Honors(like a combination of Chemistry and Physics. Don't know why my school doesn't have us take Biology freshman year): 75 :( (A class I actually had to study for so I hated it)
Spanish I: 100
Religion 93
(No point in listing Art, gym, etc)

Sophomore Year:
Integrated Algebra II/Trigonometry: 94
Biology: 93
English: 91
Spanish: 100
History: 90
Religion 93

Junior Year:
Chemistry Honors: 95
Math Analysis Honors (basically pre-calc honors) 90
AP English Language and Compositon: 85
History: 96
Spanish:98
Religion: 98

I know my grades suck in CC standards but at least I have an upward trend.
Also, my high school doesn't rank or do GPA on a 4.0 or 5.0 scale.
My school kind of sucks and isn't competitive. I guess it's better than a public school because all students go to college but still not good.

Classes taking senior year:
AP Calculus
AP English Literature and Composition
AP European History
AP Physics
Other required classes like religion, health, computer science, etc.

SAT I: 1900: 670 (CR), 620 (M), 610 (W).
However, I didn't study and I have been taking practice tests. I am scoring in the 2100-2200 range. Also, I took a practice test the week before the sat I took and got a 1780 so, I may do even better than the 2100-2200 range.

I am looking for colleges only in the northeast region. Although I would like summer in California my mom would kill me.

To give you an idea, two reach schools I am thinking of (and love) are Boston College and NYU (I know it's weird because they're polar opposites). I have some safeties and matches in mind but I really would like to go to one of those two.
I want to apply early action to Boston College but on their page it says that early action is for highly competitive students, but their ea admit rate is a lot higher than rd admit rate. Which would be better?

Thank you and any help would be appreciated!

Bumpity bump bump bump bump!

If you really love BC, then apply early action. your Gpa shows an upward trend and IF your scores come out as predicted then you’ll be fine

Thanks Seattle I think I will but, I’m scared the EA is too competitive.

Also forgot to say I am a white middle class female. I guess this works against me because BC is as diverse as vanilla ice cream however, I don’t think to many minorities apply there anyway.

Any other suggestions other than NYU or BC in northeast region?

Whats important to you when looking for colleges? What are you looking for in other words? Is out of state costs and issue? How far are you willing to go for college? What do you want to study?

Boston is not a good place for weather. Try in DC, American U or GW. As your test scores increase, your options increase.

1) When looking for a college I want someplace with very good academics. I’m not sure what I want to major in which is another problem I am having when narrowing down colleges. I’m very indecisive. I had a whole month where I thought I was going to be the next Woody Allen or Tarantino big shot director, a couple years where I thought I wanted to be a writer, now I am kind of interested in law. I definitely know schools heavy in math/science are out. Although I do well in those classes and state tests I know I would hate it as a career.

2)Out of state isn’t an issue I’ve talked with my parents about this and they are fine with it.

3)Northeast region only.

I actually like rainy/snowy weather weirdly. California is the only warm weather state I would want to go to because it’s beautiful and I would love to visit SA or LA but that’s out of the question :(. I have to be close because if there is ever is an emergency (like Boston marathon or 9/11 they want to be able to drive to me in less than 4 hours give or take).

Oh by the way I live in NY I forgot to mention.

Lets leave out Ivy League schools for now since the test scores aren’t all that high. With that said, from your stats ans Northeast preference it seems like schools in the PA, MA, and NY area would be best for you. Some schools I would like to throw out there are Villanova, NYU, Colgate, Boston U, and Lehigh

Wow I keep forgetting to mention things! I definitely do not ant to go to a LAC. They are beautiful and I would probably like the atmosphere, I want a good degree in which I can get a good job.

Also I want nine colleges to have ready before I go into the program I as talking about
2 safety
3 match
3 reach
American University would be good backup I guess. Another backup I have is Hofstra which I really don’t want to go to. Any ideas for backups? Would SUNY Binghamton be a backup or a match?
I have been thinking about Boston U as a match school anyways I like the city and the school seems good. Is Villanova a school that is big on science (I looked at the top 5 majors and wouldn’t be interested in any of them)? If not I can have it as a match. Other matches could be Fordham or PennState maybe?

Reaches are NYU and Boston College so I need one more reach.

Your two safeties can be Rutgers University in NJ and maybe Penn State U. You can also throw University of Delaware in there. The matches would be Boston U, NYU (maybe), University of Maryland, and Syracuse . As for reaches I would say Georgetown U, Emory, U of Rochester.

Madtown you are way too generous… I mentioned that I go to a bad Catholic School. Every time I log on to Naviance I shudder at the sight of the scattergrams (I couldn’t find my red circle for NYU when I first logged on and realized I couldn’t see it because of all the red x’s near it…) I don’t get why though because I love my school it has so many opportunities and fantastic teachers who have changed my outlook on life. (Freshman year grades were a result of depression I have had since junior high school (which actually was the top junior high in the area) but once I got used to my school I loved it and improved my grades).
Georgetown is a top ten school and Emory is top 20. I would think Penn State and Rutgers would be more like matches wouldn’t you?

Not true at all. The guesses I made were based on your expected SAT scores. Also, understand that our grades have a positive trend and many colleges find that appealing. I still believe Penn State and Rutgers are safety schools for you. I got into those schools with lower stats.

Thanks Madtown I still don’t think Georgetown is good but I’ll add Emory as a possibility. I also forgot that Naviance hasn’t put up my 1900 sat and if my practice tests are consistent with my next SAT’s it’s possible for NYU.

Also this might sound weird but does anyone know if colleges look badly on a student from a school with a lot of scandals. An ex teacher/lawyer has published a blog listing all the scandals for my school (including slight grade inflation only for those failing so not an issue for me) and my school will probably getting a lot of lawsuits this year. (It’s really not that bad in my experiences lol…)
I am thinking that’s why brilliant kids from my schools just end up going to SUNY’s instead of schools you would think they would get into ith amazing stats like theirs.

I don’t think so. Lets hope not. Which school exactly? I am from Stuyvesant and will be attending University of Wisconsin next year so i am familiar with NY schools. an as for the kids with the amazing stats lets just say its cheaper to go to SUNY and those kids probably prefer to stay close. I know from Stuyvesant, kids have amazing stats, yet many stay close and go to Binghamton, Buffalo, Syracuse, etc

Won’t post the schools name on this thread.

Since American University lists “level of applicant’s interest” as “very important” in frosh admissions, it is not a good choice for a safety.

@ucbalumnus
Hmm…okay then I’ll cross that off. I can’t see it as a place I would really love to go to
I think I have my list:
PennState (safety)
Binghamton (safety)
Fordham (safety or match?)
Boston U (match)
NYU (low reach)
Boston College (reach)
I was starting to like Emory after researching it online today but it’s in Georgia :(. When my mom hears Georgia she’ll say no so that’s out. Anybody have an idea for one more reach and one more match?
Thanks to everyone who has helped out so far.
