Free college visits.

So I've heard stuff about colleges being for friends' plane tickets to fly out to visit them prior to applying.

I was wondering how you get such a sweet gig and what kind of stats are necessary. I'm willing to go out to a school way worse than my stats if it means a free plane ticket and a nice weekend vacation.

Any help/suggestions?

I think most visits that the school pays for are for prospective athletes that have a good chance of being recruited. I’m not completely sure, though.

If you get into WUSTL, they offer free transportation for many of their admitted students. I think they also may do it for some prospective students as well. Not sure though.

That would be cool, I’d like to visit some schools out west but did not know if I could get out there before I start applying. I’d probably only do it for schools that I am pretty interested in though.

I visited some schools on multicultural programs (though some people were probably low-income whites). Get on the mailing lists of colleges. They’ll send you that sort of stuff if you’re eligible. You usually have to send a transcript and possibly write some short essays.

If you are a low-income, high achieving sophomore, you could apply for the QuestBridge College Prep Scholarship in your junior year and potentially visit our partner colleges (most elite LACs and universities). On a QB scholarship I earned my junior year of high school, I visited Bowdoin College completely free. It was an awesome experience getting out of the South, visiting New England and an elite LAC on their dime.

Anyone else get flown to places because they really want you as a student?

when i was applying, my counselor told me about harvey mudd offering something like this, but i had already decided not to apply. in hindsight, i should have at least checked it out. not sure what the criteria was though.

Hanover College in Indiana gives $500 scholarships to anyone who wants to visit their school as they apply.

Texas A&M offered $300 toward travel costs to NMS semi-finalists.

It costs more than $300 to get to College Station from MD.

Since Washington U St. Louis has to work hard to grab kids from the East and West coasts, they tend to fly a lot of promising applicants. Got two plane tickets from them (one in the fall before I even applied, one after being admitted in April), but I ultimately didn’t choose WUSTL. Finalists for scholarships at top schools also get free flights. Racking up flights is awesome, I managed to take out a straight week of school leave in April due to colleges.

Last year son was flown out to Swarthmore, Harvey Mudd and Wash U St. Louis on their dime. His other final choice, Northwestern, did not offer any assistance to attend admitted students program.

One of my friends got plane tickets from Harvard for their admitted students day (an URM, if that matters). I’ve never heard of this happening in real life before! Is it something you apply for, or does the school contact you?
