Title: Notre Dame Leadership Seminars
For: There are three tracks: Global Issues, ISI, CRSD (see the website for more info)
If you can get in (they accept 120 total, 40 per group), everything is paid for. This includes all meals, airfare, room/board, etc.
Where: ND campus

I went last summer; would definitely encourage people to check it out. It was completely free. We also got a lot of free merchandise including blankets, t-shirts (“The Shirt” if any of you are ND people), lanyards, etc (We joked they were trying to make us go there because we wouldn’t know what else we would do with all the stuff they gave us if we didn’t). We listened to lectures. I was in global issues and some were about: nuclear weapons proliferation, drones, AIDS, development. We also did some fun ones: we had a law professor talk about constitutional law and a physics professor explain the whole higgs boson thing. I actually know what that is now!

The program lasts a week; one day we went to Chicago. We saw a play, went to the bean, had alumni panel, had U Chicago lecture, visited “The Plant”. We also went rollerblading one night; we had a bonfire and a dance type thing on the last night. It was a blast. We had what were basically group presentations where we argued different sides of an issue as if we were a real person involved in the debate. Great program; would totally recommend it.

Title: Clark Scholars Program
For: Rising seniors/college freshmen, you get to do research
Where: Texas Tech University (Lubbock, Texas)
How long: 7 weeks

I went to this program this past summer and it was awesome. There’s research in different areas, varying from pure math to classical languages (humanities research? egads). Only downer is that only 12 out of 300+ people are selected.

I highly recommend that students interested in journalism and communications apply for JCamp. You network with talented peers from across the nation, as well as the big-names in the business (from CBS, MSNBC, AP, etc.)

Chapman university has a high school workshop - experimental economics. (ESI Vernon L smith high school workshop)
It’s five days residential, all free, with the chance to earn some pocket money. A limited reimbursement if you travel from far away. Best of all, it’s in Orange County California.
Not the most prestigious or even well known program on this list, but I went because I wanted a fun vacation on top of learning.

happyORmom, I did a quick look at the website but can’t find any housing information. I am assuming they don’t provide housing. Do you know if that is correct?

Bumping this because it really helped me last year. I went to the Notre Dame Leadership Seminars and loved it. I highly recommend it; transportation, room and board, tuition, etc. is all free but there is a non-refundable $50 application fee and a non-refundable $150 confirmation fee if you choose to go. It’s definitely worth it though, if you look on page 3 you’ll see all the great things involved in the program, including a trip to Chicago. Message me if you have any questions, I’d be more than happy to answer.

A really awesome program is MITES at MIT. It’s for minorities interested in science and engineering. Its 6 weeks long and free. You only need to pay for transportation there. It’s a very selective program accepting less than five percent of applicants. What’s really cool about the program is that they look at who you are as a person and what you’ve gone through sometimes more than your grades. Grades are definitely a huge factor, but if your grades aren’t perfect, it’s not the end of the world. On the app they ask for grades, SAT/ACT scores, classes, class ranking, extra curriculars, your ethnic/racial background, info about your parents, and more. You also have to have 3 recommendation letters (one from a current math teacher, one from a current science teacher, and one from your guidance counselor) and 5-6 essays that are 300 words or less. The application deadline is February 1st!

MITES at MIT and Notre Dame Leadership Seminars, are they only for US PR or citizens?
Any summer programs that are free or low cost for International students like Canadian?
