I just read this article
(http://www.nytimes.com/2008/08/21/technology/21iphone.html?adxnnl=1&partner=rssuserland&emc=rss&pagewanted=all&adxnnlx=1219370666-rX360nEYCatgStD46NwPJw) and was wondering does Duke still give out free iPods to incoming Freshman?

No as far as I know. That was only with one class, the one that just graduated last May I think.

Now, they have a different iPod program. If you enroll in an "iPod" class, then Duke or your professor will notify you and you can either loan an iPod for the semester from Duke or buy one (usually a refurb) from Duke for $99. iPod also come with a fairly decent microphone accessory for class use. IIRC, you can only buy one iPod during your time at Duke so if you buy one then a few years later enroll in another iPod class, you'll need to return the one you bought before to buy a new one.

What I said above is true when I bought my iPod two years ago (my freshmen year) and also last year. I don't know what kind of iPods they sell now. When I bought mine it was a 30GB video, now it's probably a Classic or maybe Touch if you are lucky.

Edit: you don't really know which class are "iPod" classes until after registration has ended, usually a bit before the class itself starts.

wow the IPod classes sound cool, did you take any?

The "free" ipods were only given to the class of 2008. (one year before me!) The good news though is that the duke computer store sells the leftover ipods that they stock for the ipod courses at a discounted price. I picked up a few for my family for like 130 bucks a pop I think.

But yeh, the ipod thing was more of a fad a few years ago. The only classes I can think of that might still be using them are language classes. (not sure though as I've never actually had a class that used ipods) The visability of the program has greatly decreased over the last couple of years. I'm sure you could find information about in on Duke's website though.

If you’re a college student, faculty, or staff member and you buy a Mac before September 15, you can get a free iPod touch or iPod nano. After all, isn’t college about seizing every opportunity?

From the apple.com web site-- FYI

The program was annoying - we had to go to training, then I always had problems uploading, etc. The ipods weren't used very much in the few ipod classes I had. Everything done on the ipods could have been done much more easily without them. When we got free basic ones, they still made us upgrade to more sophisticated ones for $99 for another class. The original ones would have been fine for the 1 time we used them. I would stay away from the ipod classes and the whole program.

I took an "iPod" class. It was "iPod" in that the instructor was iPod-certified and took a seminar on how to use it. We didn't even touch one for class.

Maybe they should provide free tablets instead of only to teachers...that'd be awesome.
