What kind of questions are on this test? I plan to take the test in September and would like to know how I should best prepare. I took 4 years of French in high school, but I am not really confident with my French. As I understand it, you can only take the test once, so I would like to make sure I don’t blow it.

Did anyone take this test at summer advising?

Yet another bump...

hey man, i took the test last year and there's a lot of grammar questions. you need to know how to use the subjunctive, and of course past/present/future. this is not an oral exam. you take it on the computer and the questions the computer asks you depend on your responses to previous questions. there's some vocab, but it's pretty basic. i also took 4 years of french in HS and got into fre23, the highest one, so i'm pretty sure you'd at least get into fre21, which is intermediate french. that would save you a year of french and fulfill the language requirement for a BA degree! good luck.

Thanks for the response. The reason I am concerned about this test is because my high school French teacher didn't really get in depth with things like grammar. She taught French in a way that she thought would best prepare us to communicate well with a French-speaking person, not necessarily to score well on a test.

I plan on self-studying a little bit for this exam, so it would be helpful if you could answer a few questions(if you remember enough). 1) How long was it? 2) Were the questions anything like this: http://www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/sat/lc_two/french/prac/pracStart.html?french (because I only got like 2 right on that) 3) If not, can you give some sample questions that would covey the difficulty and type of questions?

This is kind of a lot to ask, but I hope you can help me with this favor.

I took the test last Fall, so I don't remember too much of it, but I'll do my best.

1) The duration of the test depends on how well you answer the questions. I'd guess that the worse you do, the longer it is. For me, it felt like the test was taking forever but it was probably only 15 minutes. MAYBE it was more, but I can't really remember. There is no time limit. You can take as much time as you want answering the questions. When I took it I was in a pretty informal environment. I went to their office (I don't remember what it's called) and I took it in a doorless room next to them with 4 computers. No one rushed me or anything, it's pretty comfortable.

2) No. I think most of the questions were just fill-ins and no pictures. I'd say that you should know how to answer a question like the first one, however the rest seem pretty difficult for a placement exam.

3)

(a) Hier, je m'amusais beaucoup. Il ______ beau et le soleil etait partout.

(i) est
(ii) sera
(iii) faisait
(iv) avait ete

(b) Il est bien que vous ____________ aujourd'hui.

(i) est heureux
(ii) etes ici
(iii) vous amusiez
(iv) marchez

I made those up, and I'd say these would be medium/difficult on the exam. I don't know how you'd rate them though. I didn't give you a vocab one because I couldn't really think of one and I'm sure you've seen many ones before. Well that's the format of the test and I hope it helps. If you're taking it soon, let us know how you do. You should get your results right away.

Thanks for the help. I feel a little better about the test now.

I'm planning to take it during the first few days before classes start. I'll try to remember to post how I do.
