French SAT Subject Test!

To anyone who has already taken the French subject test: how much preparation would you say is necessary to do well on the test?

I live in Canada, so I've taken French as a requirement from grade four through to grade nine, and I'm doing it as an elective this year (grade ten). That's seven years of French, so I kind of thought it'd be super easy... I can get only about half of the questions right on practice tests.

I was planning on taking the test in June, but I'm scared that I'll do badly on it. I really don't want to give up any of the courses I've chosen for next year, but if it's absolutely vital, I will.

Thoughts?

Another year or a lot of studying (with possibly a tutor)?

Bump I’ve also been wondering, what books have you guys used to study for french/ how helpful were they?

I’m only using Princeton Review… the book store I go to didn’t have Barron’s, and I registered for June, so I don’t think it’s worth it to order it. :S

(late reply, sorry!c:)

Taking French in Canada really does not help. You learn very little if anything, even if taking it as an elective in grades 9,10,11 and 12. Basically, you learn the same thing every year from grades 4 to 8 (counting to 10 and etre). In grade nine, you may learn some very basic french, and then maybe in grade 11/12 you’ll learn the subjunctif.

Take the French subject test if you were/are in french immersion or are in French AP/ French IB. Even then, it’ll still be hard because you are competing against native speakers.

If you do study a lot, and get a tutor you could possible get 700+.

But, it’ll be easier to take other subjects tests because of the time you’ll to spend on french. Even if it means say, self studying Math or like history.

Well I’m not a native speaker and I got an 800 on it when I took the test last year (in 10th grade). You should be fine. What I did to improve my French was I read books in French. That helped me get an intuitive feel for grammar, learn more vocab, and get ready for the reading passages. You can find some French books free for Kindle on Amazon.com and Nook might have some also
