My frend’s D goes to a big U, and is taking 6 courses frenshmen year, is it true Amherst’s frenshmen only allowed to take 4 courses?
Thanks.

Kind of, I know it is possible to take 5 courses, but I'm pretty sure you have to jump through a couple hoops to do so. 4 courses per semester seems pretty much par for the course at the top schools (Ivies, near ivies, little ivies, etc.). Keep in mind that the vast majority of these courses will require a very significant intellectual involvement and that large lectures are few and far between compared to State U. I would bet that most if not all of your friend's D's courses are jumbo lectures that require little more than note taking.

Thank you CatFish. My friend's D goes to a top school(Notre Dame) & is a PreMed. She is taking 2 science courses(Chem & Bio) which require a lot of lab time.

Amherst's courses generally convert to four hour courses, which means even if you have only 3 hours of classtime, you have outside requirements besides studying, as well, with many of the classes. So taking 16 hours is no small feat when taught at the level they are at Amherst.

4 classes at Amherst is quite significant. I visited a friend at a highly ranked state U who is taking 6 courses, and her workload is not nearly as large as my own.
