Frequency of updating coaches

Just a quick question for those who might have some experience in this area. My son is a junior and has been in email contact with a number of coaches. He is currently at a point in the season where he has been competing frequently and fortunately has been improving his times each meet. Is it best to update coaches as the new times are achieved or to wait and update after several meets. We want the coaches to be aware of his improvements but don't want to come across as a pest with too frequent updates.

Thanks for any thoughts.

It probably depends on the coach. We had coaches say ‘there’s no such thing as too many updates’. I’d ask if he minds getting weekly reports. If they’re serious about recruiting him, they’ll probably be delighted.

It is a fine line between having sufficient contact that the coach knows of your progress and continued interest and being a pain in the tuckus. You need to read the feedback you get from your updates to determine into which pile your emails fall-- it depends upon the coach. Remember, a coach isn’t just evaluating athletic prowess, but also “fit”.

Coaches are most interested in times gotten at high level meets, like the state championships. I’d have your son wait and inform the coach of his performance at those meets and his PR’s at the end of the season, rather than send the results of dual meets or small invitationals.
