"All freshmen are required to attend and be in their seats on the main floor of Woolsey by 8.45 a.m. for the 9 a.m. assembly and by 10.15 a.m. for the 10.30 a.m. assembly. Proper attire should be worn. "

What constitutes "proper attire" for the students (boys, specifically!)

I think you are looking at a sports jacket and tie. Can’t go wrong with a navy blazer which is (or will be) a wardrobe staple. I’m curious to hear if current students feel otherwise.

Last year, there was great variety in what kids were wearing. I would say that most boys had either a jacket and tie, or a collared shirt and khakis. There were some in jeans and T-shirts, too, but they looked underdressed. For girls, I think a wide range of things would be fine, including nice slacks and a dress shirt.

Honestly, I think when people say something like this for an assembly of late-teen types, they mean “please wear a shirt and shoes, and don’t show any meaningful portion of your torso, thighs, or underwear.”

This event will have about 3000 attendees (all freshmen plus many parents). Within pretty wide limits, your attire is not likely to attract notice in a crowd that size. The average is probably some variation on shirt + khakis for men, skirt + top for women. There will be some in jeans and some in suits. If you dress as you would for a day at the beach, or for opening night at the opera, you’ll look out of place. Also, the reception afterwards last year was in Commons, and it was a total zoo. Not worth trying to get through the crowds and lines, in my opinion.
