Freshman Chemistry

Hello! I’m going to be a freshman next fall at Berkeley. Would you recommend taking Chem P? Also would it be too much to take 16 units + chem p (2 units) = 18units?

Your intended major?

Did you take chemistry in high school? If so, what kind of chemistry course, how well did you do in it, and, if you took any external tests (SAT subject, AP, IB) in chemistry, how well did you do on such tests?

The usual chemistry offerings are:

4A: for chemistry and chemical engineering majors; may be taken by others. Prerequisite: high school chemistry, high school physics (recommended), calculus (corequisite)
1A/1AL: for other majors that require chemistry (e.g. biology and non-chemical engineering) and pre-meds. Prerequisite: high school chemistry (recommended).
P: for those without sufficient high school chemistry background who want to prepare for 1A/1AL or 4A.

Yes, I took Chem Honors in high school. It was a while ago so I don’t remember much content (No AP, no SAT subject)
My intended major is Forestry, so I only have to take a year of chemistry. Is chem 1A hard? Like I don’t remember anything from high school at all.

You can try these practice questions for the SAT subject test in chemistry to see how well you know high school chemistry stuff:
