What are the classes and teachers recommending for an accounting major for their first semester freshman year? Also in Hutton and direct admit Kelley.

Okay, here’s a bit of a conundrum–the first course you need to take, BUS A100, is only 8 weeks long–meaning you can either take it during the first eight weeks or the second eight weeks.

In your first semester, you’d be better off taking Sandra Owen for BUS A100 Basic Accounting Skills. She will probably be just a little bit better than Vivian Winston, although I’m guessing that that Mikel Tiller will be writing the midterm and final exam, no matter who is teaching the class–so be prepared for a lot of “trick” questions.

However, the problem is that a lot of people drop this course the first time they take it (about half of the people do, based upon prior statistics), meaning they drop it during the first eight weeks–and then retake it during the second eight weeks. But Owens only teaches it the second eight weeks–so either take Winston and then drop if you have to and retake it with Owens (if you can get in), or else just plan to take it only once (with Owens) during the second eight weeks right from the start. Based upon the fact that you are an honors student, I’d say you’ll probably only need to take it once–but be aware that you will need to work hard in this course–and you should start studying some preliminary accounting during the summer, if you can.

As far as the second semester of your freshman year, just take the honors version of BUS A201 Financial Accounting in the Spring (the honors version is titled BUS A205 and is only offered in the Spring)–so be sure to get through the BUS A100 class during the first semester or else you won’t be able to get the honors version and will have to take this class with the regular folks. P.S. Hewlett taught this course in the Spring of this year (2009), but I don’t know who will be teaching it in Spring, 2010.

Is it typical to take a class only to plan to drop it? Since you are adjusting to school wouldn’t it be better to take a harder class the second eight weeks?

I am direct admit kelley and plan to be a marketing major. Do I need to take accounting as a freshman or can I wait? I want to try to get into the business honors program so I want a good GPA. I took AP calc in high school but not accounting.

If you don’t take a100 while as a freshman it looks really bad when you apply to business honors (they look at the difficulty of your classes as well as gpa).

maxellis, Thanks for the heads up re: business honors, do you reccomend taking it first semester or second? Based on the info in this thread I am leaning toward taking it second semester, I 'm not sure I see the advantage of being able to drop a course first semester if I will still have to take it second semester. As stlramsfan points out at least I will be adjusted to school by second semester.

I have heard the statistic “2/3 of every intended business major takes a100 more than once” before, but I am not sure if it is true. I would recommend it first semester, that way if you need to drop it you can take it again. If you take a100 the first 8 weeks of the first semester and x220 the second 8 weeks, even if you need to drop it, you can take it again the first 8 weeks of second semester. A100 is difficult and involves studying, but not x220, so when finals roll around in January (or May) there is one less final to study for. I did take a100 the first 8 weeks of second semester and although I passed on my first try, looking back I wish I had taken it the first 8 weeks of the first semester.

I agree also with the plan maxcellis mentions here–trying to take BUS A100 during the first eight weeks and then BUS X220 during the second eight weeks.

The grading in BUS X220 is so easy compared to BUS A100 it is like day and night. I think that in BUS X220 the grade is based about 70% just on attendance, so as long as you show up you are just about guaranteed to pass that class. I also think it has the highest average GPA of any business class offered at Indiana University at Bloomington.

BUS A100, on the other hand, I believe has the lowest average GPA of any class offered in the business school since they use it as the “weed-out” class for who gets into Kelley and who doesn’t–so beware, and start studying early.

And stlramsfan, the reason I suggest this order is for exactly the reason mentioned by maxcellis–that it is better to have your tough final after the first eight weeks–well before all the other finals come around. If you have to take the BUS A100 final along with the other finals at the same time, you will regret it.

Can I take BUS A100 the first 8 weeks of second semester freshman year? Is it not offered then or is there a reason why this is not advisable? If I took it the first 8 weeks of second semester wouldn’t I still have the advantage of not having other finals to study for? Is the only disadvantage that I would not want to drop it and leave it for the second 8 weeks of second semester? I apologise for all the questions on this topic but I just want to make sure I understand the advantages/disadvantages. Thanks for all the help!

stlramsfan was an honors student who is also an accounting major.

For him, it is important to take A100 in the first semester (fall) and get it passed so that he can take the honors version of B201 (which is B205) in the spring semester. (It is only offered in the spring semester.)

If you are not yet in Kelley, and you are not an accounting major (you said you were a marketing major), then yes, it is fine to take this during the first 8 weeks of the second semester. You want to take it the first eight weeks, though, so if you need to, you can retake it during the 2nd eight weeks.

There are two reasons for this:
The first reason for this is so that it will show that you already passed it when you apply for admission to Kelley.
The second reason is so that you can take the Financial Accounting and Managerial Accounting courses in your sophomore year (and so you can take them in separate semesters, since they are both tough courses).

Thanks Calcruzer, I am direct admit Kelley but I am not honors.

Just a question, I took Accounting in High school and live close to a community college and has a class that that IU-Kelly accepts as A100.

Would you take this over the summer instead of Fall. I am a Direct adm

Sorry about the above message. Here my question…I have the opportunity to take the A100 at the community college over the summer. IU will accept the transfer credit.

Should I take over the summer or wait till I get to IU. I am a Direct Adm so this should not have an impact.

I don’t think Kelley will accept transfer credit for A100 from any community college, except Ivy Tech and then only if you take the equivalent of A201 and A202 (two three-credit courses) and get a B or better in both. What you say sounds impossible. What state are you in?

Yes they do. I’m in Illinois and IU even has what classes convert to their classes

No way. Where is your proof? Do a search for courses that transfer for A100 and you won’t find any in Illinois community colleges or any other community colleges in any state except Indiana. Given how many people at IU are from suburban Chicago and have struggled with A100, you will have a major scoop.

There is a website with all the transfer credits and ****. If the website says you can take it and the credit will transfer, then it most likely will.

Just to double check, I would call some advisors or someone at IU to make sure the credit will transfer.

From what I know, the Business schedule is pretty easy. First 2 years are pre-reqs, and junior year is I-CORE + some other classes you have to take for your major. Senior year you finish all your major requirements and other graduation requirements.

There are around 15 pre-reqs for your 4 semesters. I ended up only having to do 12/13 cause of my AP test scores.
