My son is trying to decide which dorm to request. He tried looking at the online map but they say XYZ Hall or whatever but it isn't clear which classes are in which building. He will be a Liberal Arts Psychology major. The first year will be mostly basics.

He was considering Whitis based on a current students recommendation but he doesn't want to stay there if all of the classes are by the other dorms.

Any help will be appreciated!

I personally don’t think dorm location is a big deal. I live in Duren (across Kinsolving, Whitis Avenue/Dean Keeton), and I have classes at somewhere near Jester, and it’s 15-20 minutes walk at the most. It’s something I enjoy with a good music and headphone =p.

What you should consider more is those “back-to-back” classes, cause if you do have one, and they are located far away, chances are you’ll be late all the time. And dorm quality is a more important factor than location. To me, Duren’s nice, it’s awesomely clean (it’s the newest, and it’s interior is magnificent. Gives out high-class vibes), and it’s directly opposite Kinsolving where great lunch and dinner are provided for only around $4.50.

Then again this is only my opinion =).

Yeah, I’d have to say dorm location doesn’t matter a whole lot, unless you’re just unwilling to wake up a few minutes earlier to go to class. I live in the honors quad and have classes as far away as the stadium and as close as the geography building. UT’s campus really isn’t THAT big and nothing will be more than a 10-15 minute walk away.

an aside: somebody during orientation told me that, as a liberal arts major, most of my classes would be in the Six Pack, so I should try to live as close to the Six Pack as possible. I have not one class in the Six Pack. :P

Go for the Honors Quad! (Andrews, Blanton, Carothers) (Littlefield is 4th to the quad but it’s all girls haha). It’s so peaceful here and location-wise would not be a problem because there’s a bus-stop very close to the quad. And the rooms are pretty good sized too. I think it’s been a really good place to be for my freshman year. :)

As others have said, the UT campus isn’t that large/hard to navigate. It really doesn’t matter where you live at since you can reach most classes fairly quickly. If you really worry about the location to classes that much, have your son bring a bike. He can reach anywhere on campus in a short time with one.

As for the dorm itself, if you can, try to get a renovated Jester East Floor. They are extremely nice, the location is extremely convenient (dining areas just a stones’ throw away, Gregory Gym across the street, the library a 2 minute walk, Recsports a few minutes walk, close to the football stadium), while being very nice and clean. The bathrooms are the community type, but they are cleaned daily and most of the time when you enter it, it looks brand new.

It’s a huge gamble since you aren’t really guaranteed a renovated floor, but compared to the $2K more San Jacinto, it is easily comparable in terms of quality (A Jester East renovated dorm with private bath is basically a San Jacinto Room, but for around $1500 less).

My son stayed on Jester East (renovated room) this summer during orientation. His room this year is on Jester West. He likes West better! He said the room layout is better.
