Trying to put together a tentative course selection before DD meets with her advisor at Orientation. Does anybody know anything about the Cultural Knowledge requirement? What are the specific classes that would satisfy this requirement. I was not able to find this info in the Academic Planning Guide for first year students. Thanks.

It is part of the Core Curriculum: http://tulane.edu/college/upload/Curr-Guide-2010-11-R506.pdf ; many many ways to fulfill

Here is what I don’t fully understand… which classes are considered to be in “Perspectives in the European Tradition” and which are “outside the European Tradition” and what are “Comparative Cultures and International Perspectives”???

If you go to the course listings: [Tulane University - Class Schedule](Tulane University Schedule of Classes) you can filter courses by leaving Subject Area on “All” and using the Curriculum Requirements section to look at those areas. It seems to work OK for Perspectives - Non-European, but I think that for European Perspectives you have to look under Western Traditions. Someone needs to fix it, I don’t trust it is completely indexed.

So maybe better to use these lists:

[Perspectives in the European Tradition](http://www.tulane.edu/~currcomm/text/EuropeMain.html)

[Perspectives Outside the European Tradition](http://www.tulane.edu/~currcomm/text/OuteuropeMain.html)

[Comparative Cultures and International Perspectives](http://www.tulane.edu/~currcomm/text/ComparativeMain.htm)

These seem quite complete, but it would be more useful if the scheduling program matched this.

Let me just say that we spent time doing a draft schedule prior to orientation and it was a complete waste. All the assumptions we made were wrong. The advisors work with them one-on-one or two-on-one and get it all done on day 2 of orientation.

:)

Mavitale, you are the best. We are here now and my DD and I were going to spend time this morning figuring out her schedule. Now I can let her sleep in. Thanks!

Just an update: The Perspectives in the European Tradition was replaced by the Western Tradition requirement.

Ah, that explains it. That is probably a better title.

If you log into Gibson, go to Schedule of Classes, and then go to the “Curriculum Requirements” box on the bottom left, you’ll be able to scroll through and pre-select for certain curriculum requirements, e.g., Western Traditions, outside the Western Traditions, Fine Arts and so on. Just click on the requirement you’re looking to fill and then search “All Courses”

Every course (being offered in the Fall) that fills that particular requirement would come up. You’ll be able to look through and then see what classes seem interesting. It might be overwhelming tho, because of the sheer number of classes. But it might help, too.

Is that somehow different than what I said in post # 4? Someone should delete the option on the Curriculum Requirements menu of “Perspectives - Non European”.
