Freshman Curriculum and Electives....

Going to CAS, most likely will be either a Biochem major or Romance Language Studies/Linguistics [I know they are completely different, family is playing a role here]

However, I have a huge interest in art, more specifically painting and sculpture, as well as film, prodimently editing and production.

My question, even though I'm at CAS, can I still take art and film classes as a freshman? Or do I have to wait until my sophmore year? Also, what is the normal CAS freshman curriculum?

Well, Tisch would have most of the film classes you are talking about and they are pretty strict about letting non-tisch students take their courses. Sometimes you can get around it or switch in tisch later but i am not sure.

I am pretty sure you can take up to 16 credits outside CAS...
I have a friend who is in CAS but she's taking drawing courses so I presume it wouldn't be a problem.

There is no such thing as the "normal CAS freshman curriculum," because you can choose to have all your freshman subjects be electives, or MAP requirements, or a little mix of both. For prudence's sake though, most freshmen take a couple of MAP courses (these are the core course prerequisites that every CAS student must complete) along with courses for their majors each semester.

For example, in my first semester I took 3 MAP courses (Natural Science I, Writing the Essay, Calculus I (this isn't actually a MAP course but it can be taken in lieu of the Mathematics part of the MAP requirement) along with one elective. I did this mainly because I didn't know what my major was going to be, so I wanted to finish the MAP requirements as early as possible.

Anways, I would be happy to answer your questions further.

as far as film courses go....i know tisch has an "open arts curriculum" where there are certain classes that are open to all undergraduates. this was the only info i could find on the website: http://specialprograms.tisch.nyu.edu/page/openClasses

its not all that helpful, but there's a link on the right side of the page where you can request more information, so you might wanna go ahead and do that

The Fine Arts dept. is in CAS but I don't know if its art history classes are open to non-majors. Honestly, I haven't met anyone in this department. Tisch, as mentioned by scrapnel, has open arts curriculum which are the only Tisch classes open to non-majors.

I have a kind of random question that kind of relates to frosh curriculum... I think...haha:

Are there any astronomy/astrophyics science courses that can count as a GE science credit, or any GE credit that I need (as a tisch film major)? I hate science classes but I love astronomy...

and I'm also wondering if I should even take the AP Chem exam to try and get credit for science... although I don't know if I'd be able to get a 4... so then it would be useless to take it...

Tawny.
As far as I know there is only one such course that would cover astronomy; Natural Science I: Cosmos and the Earth. However, if you are interested in physics in general I would suggest you take Natural Science I: Einstein's Universe :P. Both courses are taught by the same professor and he is awesome.

Thanks y17k! Cosmos and the Earth would probably be more to my liking... b/c the only part of AP physics I enjoyed was the astrophysics section... haha

I was looking on NYU's website, it's possible for a Tisch student to double major into CAS, so I'm assuming it's also possible for the inverse? That being me, a CAS student, can double major in Cinema Studies or Film & Television [if I decided to take it past the whole elective thing] would I have to then apply to Tisch to be eligible to take classes that arent "open" to all NYU undergrads?

Just kidding, CAS actually just created a Cinema Studies major in CAS that works hand in hand with Tisch. Well that just about solves everything.

http://www.nyu.edu/cas/Academic/Programs/CinemaStudiesMajor.html

anna, no,the inverse is not true. CAS students cannot double major in Tisch. The new CAS Cinema Studies major is a possibility but keep in mind that it is very small, and will be very competitive to be admitted.

right. you can only double major in whatever school you got accepted to (aka im in tisch so i could double major there...even though they discourage it - for obvious reasons), OR anyone can do a second major in CAS. at least thats what i understand from talking to the admissions people.
