Do freshman participate in research in the School of Engineering? Are there different majors within the school (i.e. computer science vs chemical engineering) that start research sooner? Do they do it for credit or are they paid? Does everyone eventually do research? What is the easiest way to find a professor to research with and when is the best time to start the search process? Thanks!

Most people do NOT do research while in school, however, it is encouraged. You will probably have a really hard time getting a position as a freshman or sophomore. It is kind of like an internship in that they want you to be familiar with (taken classes in) the subject area that they are researching, so you generally won’t do that until late sophomore year or early junior year.

When it does come time, just get to know a prof through class, or just flat out go find one on the internet you are interested in and ask him about working for him. Even better, talk to your academic advisor and see if he/she can help you find a professor who you can work with. Just tell them your interests, and they can usually help direct you to faculty in that area, and sometimes put in a good word for you.
