Freshman dorm placement- University of South Carolina

I’m very confused on how freshman are placed in dorms. I have been researching on how it’s decided and I mainly only find information for Capstone or honors college freshman. Does anyone know how an incoming freshman without HC or Capstone will be placed? Is it random or do we decide when filling out the forms?

I just did my housing. I can help you out too, I just gotta know if you’re planning on finding a roommate on Facebook or being placed with someone randomly (but still in a dorm of your choice)

I’m probably just going to do a random person (isn’t there like a survey you take to find one?) and all I know is that I would like to be in a co-ed dorm.

You can request dorms. Or at the very least you request the LLC or common course community you want to be in, and these are typically in a certain dorm. You can list several in order of preference and priority is determined by your USC application date (NOT your housing date or the date you submitted your deposit).

Maybe this link will help.
Ignore the “under construction” at top – click on the individual dorms below. They will show a thumbnail of each location, and whether it’s coed, etc. I believe (but am not sure) they may also show relationships to the learning communities

Hope it helps some.

I have been trying to figure out where you can find out which dorms each LLC’s is associated with. I have been to the location that is from the above link (thanks CurlSnout), but that didn’t give the info. Any ideas?

If you look on link Curlsnout gives, and click on the different dorms, on the picture that comes up look to right under “Housed here” and it tells you the community. For instance, Columbia Hall listed several communities. Maxcy houses international, Thornwell is music, East Quad is pre-professional, Green quad is green, etc. BUT it doesn’t work for every dorm. Some change from year to year. For instance several years ago, South tower use to be all women, now co-ed by floor. If you look on page that list communities some do reference a specific dorm (Patterson for women, McBryde for Men, didn’t look at all).

Can you confirm - priority for housing is given by application date, not date you apply for housing? (I didn’t see this info on the USC housing website) Son still deciding and heading down to USC for scholarship wknd in early April so probably wouldn’t apply for housing til mid-April. He’s been admitted to Capstone, so I’d hate to have him shut out of that dorm by deciding late.

Step 4: I’m Approved for Housing. What’s Next?

Once you have applied for on-campus, you’re finished learning community assignment by your orientation date. Your room assignment and roommate/suitemate assignment will be available online during summer 2016. Assignment coordinators will make assignments following these guidelines:
•Applications are sorted into types: Associated Learning Community applications, Common Course selections and general learning community selections. ***** Then, within each type, applications are sorted by the date of each student’s application to the university.***** Associated Learning Community assignments are made first, then Common Course assignments, followed by general learning community assignments.
•Freshmen are assigned with other freshmen unless space is restricted. However, students participating in Associated Learning Communities may be assigned with upperclass students.
•University Housing does not guarantee to assign a specific roommate to share the room, but will attempt to honor specific requests whenever possible. In order to maximize your chances, students must mutually prefer one another and both students must have paid applications on file prior to May 1. The assignment will be based on the preferences listed on the application with the earliest submission date to the university.
•If the first learning community you (and your roommate, if applicable) list as preferred is “full” when we get to your “turn,” we will proceed to the next learning community listed. The process is continued until all assignments are made.

You can also call housing if you want to be clear about what this means.

App date is definitely how assignments were prioritized last year and website appears unchanged. If your S applied close to the deadline, suggest that he try to find a roommate with an earlier app date. Some students were shut out of Capstone last year but hopefully that is not typical. If he applied early, no worries.

Thanks - he applied early (before Oct 15), so I’m hoping that will help him get into Capstone dorm. Does anyone know if being a Capstone Scholar helps you get into the Int’l Business program?

My son is also Capstone scholar. Not getting Honors was a heart breaker but we have moved on with a great scholarship (and getting Capstone was nice) . We are from GA. He’s 95% decided on USC. We went to a previous scholarship weekend in Jan. Pretty cool. Capstone USE to be an auto-admit to IB but that changed abt 2 years ago. I actually emailed a Capstone faculty rep for this info and here’s the responcse… Being a Capstone Scholar does not guarantee priority or automatic entry into IB like it did a few years ago. That said, IB still looks favorably upon Capstone Scholar students during the application process. Hope that helps necollegemom .

Daughter was in Patterson, which was her first choice. She filled out the paperwork for the LLC that went with Patterson to increase her odds of getting it. And interestingly, not much LLC-type stuff happened once she lived there hah.
