Freshman Dorms

Right now I'm trying to determine which of two dorms to pick from. I originally wanted to pick Wolman, but I figured I would only get one opportunity to be in the Freshman Quad (I'll pick McCoy as a sophomore). I know that asking about dorms will produce biased answers, but I can't pick between the AMRs and Buildings A & B. How many bathrooms are there per floor in the AMRs? How chatty is it there (I hear it's pretty social, so do people usually not study in the AMR dorms)? How much more expensive are Buildings A & B? If you have any info about these two dormitories that could help me decide, feel free to tell me. Thank you so much!

why Mccoy as a sophomore? That’s the worst sophomore dorm! Also, I recommend choosing Wolman. It’s just as social and really comfortable. You’ll still hang out in the AMR’s since you’ll definitely will make friends there.

That… doesn’t exactly answer my question. From what students have told me, McCoy and Wolman have almost the same setup, so I’d like to go there sophomore year. As I said previously, I want to stay on the Freshman Quad so Wolman is unfortunately out of the question. What are the perks of the AMRs and the Buildings? Downsides? Thanks for responding.

but why mccoy sophomore year? commons is way better. but if not woman. choose AMR’s. A and B are also suite style but have no common room so, save for a few exceptions, A and B are much less social

here is 2013 pricing
AMR I & II Double-$7920; Single-$8998
Building A&B, Wolman & McCoy Double-$8612; Single-$9684

AMR I&II are traditional dorm style rooms with common shower/toilet areas
Building A&B and Wolman are suite style each with private baths. If you get a single in AMR I&II you get a room for yourself. But a single in A&B or wolman is a room for yourself in a two room suite. The advantage of AMR I&II bathrooms is the janitorial service clean the bath area whereas in the suites, it is your responsibility to clean it. Wolman also has a small kitchenette area with fridge microwave and oven. But it is also far (relatively) from freshman quad and more importantly FFC. Hence the choice of room dictates (sort of) what meal plan you should sign up for (unlimited or 14 meals per week). The advantage of A&B over AMR I&II is that it has AC.

Hi oopp! Congratulations on getting accepted to Hopkins! I’m currently a sophomore at Hopkins so hopefully I can be helpful in answering your questions!

First, while McCoy seems nice now, wait until you see the other sophomore dorms- they are awesome! I currently live in Homewood and my apartment is HUGE and super nice. Trust me, no one picks McCoy for sophomore year unless they have to. (For sophomore housing, they use a lottery process where you are assigned a number and pick rooms based on your number.) McCoy is the dorm that people with low numbers get stuck in.

Last year I lived in AMRI Wilson House in a single. While I enjoyed living in the AMRs, they do have some disadvantages. There is no air conditioning. It was basically about 95 degrees year round in my room and I had to have my window open all winter. (I was on the third floor). The rooms are also tiny! People usually say that the AMRs are really social, but it depends on your floor/house. My floor was not social at all. The best thing about the AMRs is the communal bathrooms because they are cleaned all the time! The number of bathrooms per floor depends on which AMR you are in and which floor. In AMRI, there are girls and boys bathrooms on every floor. (My floor had 2 toilets and 3 showers for about 17 girls. While this seems like very few, I never once had to wait to use the bathroom or shower.) AMRII has boys and girls bathrooms on alternating floors and usually has about 4 bathroom stalls and 3-4 showers for about 25 girls. After living in the AMRs, I would suggest choosing Wolman. Most of my friends lived (or if they didn’t, then hung out) in Wolman. I find that Wolman is so much nicer than the AMRs and the Buildings. The rooms in Wolman are much bigger and every floor has a really awesome common room with a TV. You can even control the temperature in your room! While Wolman seems far from FFC, it really isn’t. You usually eat with your friends and you walk with them to FFC. Living on the Freshman Quad is really not a big deal. For 90% of the school year, people don’t hang out outside because of the weather. And when it is a nice day, people usually socialize on the Beach (which is across from Wolman). So overall, I would suggest living in Wolman over the AMRs and the Buildings. If you have any more questions, feel free to message me!
