....so what exactly makes this class something that we should try to get through and over by the fall...rather than wait for spring?

I am not looking forward to any english classes...but I guess I'm not much different from most of the SCS students...

I'm hearing it's better to get it over sooner than later.

What's the requirements of the class?
Is it lots of work? (Relative to calc 3d, concepts)
What's the typical grade -- is this a "C" class for SCS students ...or if I had an easy/yet unenjoyable time in my high school english classes, can I expect to get at least a "B"...

Why is this class dreaded?
What's wrong with putting it off until Spring..

I don’t think it’s very important to get it out of the way. I took it in the spring and it didn’t bother me, although I’m in CIT, not CS.

The class consists of three essays of increasing length. There are no exams, but some teachers will give quizzes. All teachers will assign HW, but it’s really not going to kill you.

Three essays for a semester isn’t really that bad. Most likely you’ll be doing more work for all your other classes. I think the bad reputation you are hearing is probably because, as you said, CS students don’t like to write essays. If you just don’t put off these essays you’ll do fine in the class. You don’t have to be an English major to get an A.

I’ve posted what this class entails in some thread around here, but I’ll just quickly recap:

Basically, the “difficulty” of this class is based on the subject you choose. If it interests you, then you’ll have lots to write about, and hopefully this will be an easy class (I put far less effort into this class than my AP english ones and still got away with an A).

Just find a subject that interests you (Piracy, l33tsp34k, comics, social equality?) and it shouldn’t take too much effort on your part. In all due seriousness, this class may take up your weekend at most three times (the aforementioned essays), and you’ll probably find time to squeeze in your readings.

I managed to do about three whole readings the entire semester and recycle quotes from one essay to the next casting them in slightly different contexts and pull out an A with minimal effort. but it was the 8:30am section. ■■■.
