Freshman Got a 26 ACT

Hey everyone,

So I am a Freshman and I just scored a 26 composite for the ACT plus writing on June 10th. I got 29 Math 29 English 22 READING 24 SCIENCE 8 Writing (remember its out of 12 not 36!).

Am I a lost hope for getting a 34-36? I have tried to look for people’s frosh scores then their junior scores but I can’t find any. I know to read more, since I never read and I despite the action, but I’m not sure what more to do.

Dude, you’re a freshman. You have three years to improve. Calm down and come back in your junior year

Yes!

My D only took the ACT once but did take the PSAT as a Freshman, Sophomore and Junior. Here is her testing history:

9th - PSAT 1950 (old format) - no studying
10th PSAT 2100 (old format) - no studying
11th PSAT 1480 - SAT 2240 (old format) - self studied for the old SAT for a couple of weeks
12th - ACT 36 - did a 5 week self study ‘boot camp’ leading up to the September ACT.

So it’s possible to make that can of improvement from 9th to 12th. Why did you take the ACT as a freshman anyway?

A 26 as a freshman (entering 9th or 10th grade doesn’t matter) is a very, very good score. It’s certainly not too late to get a 34+

I took it as a baseline. I wrote in a letter so my score gets deleted so it was a no risk test so I know where I do poorly.
Congrats on the 36 btw, what was this book camp that you talk about

I’ve taken the ACT as a Freshman, Sophomore, and Junior.
Freshman- 28- mainly thanks to a good english and math knowledge
Sophomore- 30- i didn’t really study, except the night before, I improved in every section except reading.
Junior- 34- I took two practice tests and I used tips from prep scholar to boost my score. Stuff like understanding your mistakes is critical
A 26 is a great score for a Freshman. It’s honestly not a big deal. If you practice, maybe get a high quality review book, you will improve your score.

I’d reccommend improving all your sections overall, but really work on practicing reading and science. Reading is still my lowest score, and I’ve been working on it today. Prep scholar has some great tips

As a freshman you probably won’t have even finished all the math classes in high school yet that are tested on the ACT. I know for sure Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, and a bit of Trig are on the ACT math so unless you’ve completed all that already your math score will have a ton of upward potential. Don’t sweat it. You have plenty of time.

At this point, I would focus on excelling in the classroom and getting involved in activities that interest you. Testing comes later on.

I have a kid that took in 8th (23 comp), 9th (27 comp), 10th (31 comp) and will hopefully just be taking it one more time for a strong final score. You will naturally improve with more course work and your speed and confidence will naturally get better too. I think it’s a great idea to start early and take it once a year. Familiarity is a friend. Do a practice test the week before. Don’t get serious about studying until you are a junior.

The best piece of advice I can offer that helped my kid and not just for ACT but for math in general - keep some sort of review of math concepts going.
