Freshman Housing Options

I was just wondering if it was mandatory for OOS incoming freshman to live in the dorms of UM, or are they also allowed to live in apartments/condos/etc. and commute to the school? Is this a complicated process since I'm OOS?

Personally, I would like to dorm, but because I constantly play music and mess around with MIDIs, play piano on my synthesizer, do vocal training, etc, I don't want to be of a disturbance to my roommate/dormmates (and I'm not entering the music major either, so I don't think I will be eligible to use any of their facilities, if there are any that would be of help to me).

Also, if I do decide to go with my own housing and I checked the residence hall box on my application for housing preference, is this going to be a big problem?

I would appreciate any response I can get. Thanks!

It's not mandatory for students to live on campus. However, you will be missing out on a big part of college life if you live in an apartment. The dorm is where most people meet their friends. Some of the dorms have music practice rooms--or, you could contact the music school and find out if you can use their facilities.
