Freshman Housing

It looks like I will be attending UNC in the fall (woohoo!) and wanted to get some ideas on housing. I know you only have a limited number of choices, but I'd like to hear which you all think are "best".

Thanks guys!

i heard that most freshmen live kn the southern side of the campus? idk

Congrats! The only residence hall we’ve seen is Craig. It’s part of south campus where I think most of the freshman reside. It was different. Students use their kid cards to enter a door from the outside hallway and there’s a short hallway with 4 rooms and a single bathroom at the end of the hall. That would be 8 people sharing one bathroom. The rooms were small. I guess there would be pros and cons.

Speaking as a current freshman ('17), most of the other first-years live on south campus. I know a few other first years who live in mid or north campus and they feel isolated from people on south campus, even though they are much closer to classes and Franklin Street. If you intend to rush for frats/sororities, Granville is in a good location.

The best dorm for you really depends which experience you’re after. Smaller dorms like Koury and Horton have larger rooms, are quieter, and overall have higher quality living conditions, but lack in the social scene. E-haus (Ehringhaus) and Hojo (Hinton James) are the most social, as they are highrises with smaller rooms. This makes it very easy to make friends there and people from all over south campus hang out in those residence halls. I don’t know a lot about any of the other dorms from personal experience. I personally lived in Koury for my first year and liked it for the most part. Cleaning bathrooms wasn’t too bad. With it being the honors dorm, I was able to meet other members of the honors program for the first month or so, but after that the dorm sort of died socially.

I’d suggest you look into dorm rating sites for UNC dorms and take them with a grain of salt, as some of them have only a few reviews for each dorm. Also, ask people you know who are recent graduates or current students about their first year experience with housing. Explore the housing site to look into other options. Good luck with housing and welcome to Carolina!
