Housing?

All right, here's a repost, due to some crazy CC database error . . .

Speak to me about housing. I've been through the housing website and it hasn't told me anything concrete about what's better than what. Can anyone tell me about the best units for a freshman to apply to, or maybe a little description of the character of the best? I know it changes from year to year, but there must be some obvious outstanders that I can put on my application. Danke!

I would like to know also. Does anyone know the closest dorm to the gym?

You guys are coming in at a really bizarre time. The housing policy is being completely changed this year to give incoming freshmen and rising sophomores first choice about north campus dorms, to encourage upperclassmen to move to these brand new apartment buildings on south campus. therefore, it would be in your best interest, if you want to live on north campus, to apply there. However, i would STRONGLY recommend choosing south campus dorms as a freshman.

and as for the gym, the closest one to the new ramshead complex is morrison south or the mid-campus dorms (carmichael, parker, avery)... and the SRC (the older gym) is pretty much between the mid campus dorms and the north campus dorms.

Why would you strongly recommend South Campus? What are the pros and cons of each area?

Do you mean that a lot of freshmen will be on North now?

the tour guide when i visited also strongly recommended south campus for dorms. i think it's because most freshmen are there so its easier to make your friends.

but won't a lot more frosh be in north campus next year?

the main plan is to make north campus 50% underclassmen & 50% upperclassmen. Right now it is about 45/55.

the main reason i recommend south campus is the social aspect. the dorms are much more lively, and the suite style makes it a lot easier to make friends. my friends that live on north campus don't dislike it, but they come down to south campus to hang out because north campus is rather boring. Will that change next year? maybe, but not likely.

my true opinion is that the best dorms on campus are the "directional" dorms on south campus. Ehringhaus South, Morrison South (soon to be "Paul Hardin"), Craige North, and Hinton James North are great. They are brand new (a few years old), have great facilities, and are still a part of south campus.

Hey Upstater,

Are there any differences within the South Campus communities?

Probably not so much among communities as if you live in the older or newer south campus dorms. Living in Ehringhaus South is very different from living in Hinton James. But, as far as I'm concerned, Hinton James is the most lively of any dorm on campus, let alone on South Campus. The other 10 story dorm, Morrison, is closed for renovations and won't be open until fall '07.

Ehringhaus and Craige have seemed a little dead the few times I've been in them.

Also, the 'directional' dorms house a lot of athletes. The basketball team lives in the Hinton James North basement, the lacrosse teams live in Morrison South, and a lot of the football team lives in Ehringaus South.

What's the Academic Enhancement Program, the theme housing, like?

What about Cobb?
