Freshman Internships

Are any freshmen expecting get internships this summer? What are they, and where are they? What will you be doing? I am likely to intern at a local Merrill Lynch office. I'm another IB hopeful.

If you're interested in banking, why in the world would you do PWM? It's like OperaDad said, they are two completely different things.

Actually, freshman PWM is a fine experience; not all freshmen will have that BB name on their resumes, and you can definitely spin some of your PWM responsibilities into something that would help for IBD.

The best kind of internship, though, is one where you are given lots of responsibility and are able to make an enormous and measurable impact. Although those internships are hard to find and you won't know for sure until you actually work there, PWM is not the place for that.

A local merrill office is a great place to start. You'll have access to a lot of information which could make or break your next internship interview. Take advantage of the bloomberg terminal and other technical financial applications. There's a wealth of information that you can access. Print out a few reports each day in various areas that interest you; fixed income, derivatives, equities etc. It will help you with making a clear and concise statement about the markets when asked. Granted, you aren't expected to know everything but being able to coherently talk about the markets will show how passionate you are.

I would arguably say that a local Merrill office is one of the best training grounds for a freshman/sophmore.

My sister took the PSAT shes a sophomore though and she got an email from Brown for an internship this summer.

Have you ever worked in banking? PWM has absolutely NOTHING to do with investment banking. There is nothing you "spin" that would help for IBD in PWM. That's like encouraging a prospective pilot to work at the Burger King inside LaGuardia International Airport just because it has the LGA name.

If you want to do banking, do an internship in banking.

yhsa2nd, I'm pretty sure this discussion is about college freshman.

Just wondering though, you said your sister is a high school sophomore and got an email for Brown about an internship. What's the internship about?

I'm well aware that PWM is not like investment banking. Regardless, PWM offers the BB brand name that catches recruiters' eyes, shows you can work in a professional, hierarchical environment, and gives you some exposure to finance. PWM is a stepping stone that helps secure interviews.

There's really not much better you can realistically hope for out of freshman year, especially this summer.

I think it would be very difficult for me as a freshman to get an IB internship. As far as I know, there's a limited amount that I can do. It's not like there's a Goldman Sachs down my street, I would probably need to be in a city to get an IB internship, no?
