In order to get the BB internship later on, what's a good way to start off your Freshman Summer???

What "experience" can you accumulate on a blank resume?

What "experience" can you accumulate on a blank resume?

You don't need anything first year. I can tell you that unless you've got very good connections, you're a genius (i.e. one of the top schools at a super target), or you've placed in a big competition (i.e. putnam), you probably won't get any sort of internship in IBD at one of the top BB's, which IMO are GS and MS.

Now, you can certainly land something in Private Wealth Management, but that is more of a BS internship, and you'll have to determine whether it's worth it to sacrifice your last free summer for a PWM internship. You may also look into boutiques.

Your main goal should be to accumulate a few good references who can speak highly of your work ethic and general competence. The type of internship you get is less important.

Does attending a top college guarantee an internship (ie recruiting) or is that even intense with competition among kids in one school, fighting it out for internship spots?

It's hard to get a good internship freshman year no matter where you go. I'm a rising sophomore at Princeton, and quite a few of my friends didn't get internships this summer. If they had tried harder and had been willing to take unpaid positions, they probably would have had better luck. But the point is that you won't have recruiters beating down the door to hire freshman. On campus recruiters focus mainly on juniors.

Which school are you attending?

Attending a target school and having a high GPA are essential to internship recruitment.

What would you do in PWM anyway? Just curious because I'm not sure what I want to be doing next summer.

I was also interested in doing something the summer after freshman year...but I guess there aren't very many options.
Besides PWM, there is nothing really open for freshmen?

Best way to get a junior year internship? A sophomore summer internship.
Best way to get a sophomore year internship? A freshman summer internship.
Best way to get a freshman year internship? Working hard, networking, understanding finance, and being a fun person to be around.

In an economic environment were nothing is certain, I would advise that you look for any summer internship at a BB. Most internships for freshmen are usually for credit only and are also usually unpaid. I know for a fact that Merrill Lynch has a program for freshmen. I'm sure a couple of others have.

The odds of getting an Ibanking internship as a freshman in a BB is almost as high as the odds of striking crude oil in your bath tub. However, if you look into other banks that are not BBs such as Royal Bank of Canada Capital Markets, you could get something. I have a friend who got a sales and trading internship there as a freshman.

I think boutiques, or for credit BB internships are good for freshman year. It sets you appart when you apply for the sophomore rotational program with a BB. If you do well in the sophomore rotational program, you could actually get an offer to come back to the bank your junior year. That would put one BB job offer in your pocket whilst looking for others.

I dont know if you are female, disable, GLBT, or an ethnic minority. If you are, then there are lots of programs available which could make landing an Ibanking job much easier. You just have to be driven and ambitious enough to look for them.
