Freshman living

Im pretty sure that I'm am going to enroll at penn state university park for engineering. But now i am faced with the dilemma of where to live. Because i am majoring in engineering, I have the option of living in the engineering only housing located in the west halls. I have heard that these dorms are better quality, but I do not want to risk losing the social aspect of living with all the freshman in the east halls. Does anyone have any experience with either Of these living areas? What are the differences in the dorms and the level of social activity?

Thanks!

Hey redsox,

(before I start let me add that I am an avid Yankees fan, so hopefully you can still find my post meaningful  )

I am an incoming freshman as well for Fall 2012 at UP. I am majoring in Meteorology.

I will likely be staying in West halls with a friend I have met who is also an engineer. Now, even so both of our “special living options” are located within West, we are going to room in a normal double there.

From what I have learned, East does indeed contain more freshmen, and also is well-known for being older than most (in terms of dorm quality), and obviously louder due to parties.

West, i’ve heard at least, are quieter (they are located away from the football action and what not), and have a nicer view.

I HAVE been to UP, but I have only seen South Halls during the Summer, so you may want to get another opinion on top of mine. I am visiting Penn State in April though, with a potential roommate, to further check out all dorms.

Hope this helps! :)

Jwestbrook,

As far as you being a Yankees fan, I guess everyone has their own flaws… But thanks for your reply! I understand that west is nicer and quieter, and I like the idea of having access to other students taking the same difficult classes. But I am not sure if I would want to live in the west halls and be isolated from the other freshmen that are in different majors.
