Freshman major vs what they ended up with ?

Spin off on another thread....

What was your or your child's intended major and what did they really end up with? Everyone is so focused on one program in various colleges that I think it would be interesting to see what "really" happens :D.

our house so far:

undeclared as freshman, graduated with an Econ degree
Bio/Chem as freshman, graduated with social science degree
Math as freshman, ???
Bio/Chem as freshman, ???

Last two start this fall :D.

1. Started as a computer science major, finished as a computer science major. Never even considered changing his mind.

2. Started as an economics major, finished as an economics major. Never even considered changing her mind.

Their parents, on the other hand, changed majors midstream and therefore changed the entire course of our lives. I think we are the more typical specimens.

I intended to major in math/chem, calc cured me of that. I ended up majoring in Mgt/Finance
DW started out in Mgt, ended up in Math/Finance
DD1 started and graduated with a degree in English
DD2 started and will graduate (next month!) with a degree in Math.

Ds1 didn’t have to declare until end of sophomore year. He went in thinking environmental science, declared poli sci.

S entered with an intention of trying a little bit of everything, started a third foreign language. The only major he had ruled out was his primary foreign language. Surprise, surprise: majored in that language. :)

From our family…* for people gainfully employed in their chosen field, in the end :)

comp sci, then prelaw, then communications, = English – grad school MLS*
math = math*
secondary ed history, poli sci = journalism*
mechanical engineering = photojournalism*
art education, art history = PhD art history*
engineering, geology, comp sci, = dropped out, employed in heart’s desire
primary ed = primary ed
acting = acting
film/cinematography = TBD (still in school)
primary ed, secondary ed history = TBD (still in school)
culinary arts = culinary arts*
sociology, journalism, psychology, law, communications = TBD (still in school)

D entered as Biology College of Arts & Sciences ~ will graduate from the College of Pharmacy.

This looks fun. Wish I had a list. I could add myself (because I changed majors 5 times), but that was back in the stone ages. So far, just one:

Started rad tech (yes, a bachelor’s program), now nursing.

My son, who graduates in May, started out as an econ/chemistry major. Then, he went econ/poli science/math with hopes of also earning a masters in econ all in four years. Restrictions on a scholarship ended his masters’ hopes. Will graduate with a degrees in econ and political science with a minor in math.

Entered undecided but leaning towards Politics/Econ. Declared politics with a concentration in political economy and a minor in history.

I started music and ended up business administration. S1 started and ended biology and is currently in med school. S2 started bio-engineering and ended chemical engineering.

D1 started as a physics major---->graduated as a double major in physics and mathematics. She’s now more than halfway done med school.

D2 started as a biological neuroscience major---->graduated as a double major in biological neuroscience and mathematics. Applying to medical school.

I started in chemistry---->graduated in English language and literature. Currently a medical librarian.

DH started in Chem Eng-----> graduated with a double major in chemistry and physics with a minor in mathematics. Earned a PhD in physics. Academic research physicist.

D started undecided but leaning toward biology or history. Is now a geology major.

DD entered freshman year as Theater major-and graduated as a Theater major.

Added major in Political Science and a minor in Environmental Policy.

Finished in 3 years & 1 quarter-Summa Cum Laude.

Don’t ask me when she slept…I have NO idea how she juggled THAT schedule!

Entering freshman: Anything but Accounting.
Graduating Senior: Accounting.

International Affairs, International Affairs, no job yet.

Thanks for breaking ou this thread!

Entering freshman as a biology major/pre med… Graduating with double major in English and anthropology next month.

Entering freshman as undecided, but leaning towards English… Two years later declared major in biology/pre med, with minors in chemistry and business.

1 was a Psych major and ROTC cadet as a freshman. (Wanted to be FBI agent.) Today he’s a Comm major + minors in Poli Sci and Theatre. Now, as a junior, he wants to be the next Jon Stewart.

2 is currently a freshman Health Sciences major. She’s had Physical Therapy aspirations since 7th grade. I’ll be surprised if she changes.

My daughter’s still in high school and so far, wants to major in pre-k to 4th grade education. So I’ll just do myself, my husband and some family members:

me: Started as Journalism major, went to Business, ended up in Advertising.
husband: History, from beginning to end.
nephew: Started as math major, ended up in Accounting.
brother: exactly as someone else said - started as anything but Accounting … ended up as an Accountant.
brother: undeclared … ended up in General Business because he didn’t know what else to do, graduating with a 2.0 … and he’s now the most successful of all of us.
brother: Engineering, start to finish.

My oldest has known he wanted to study computer science since he was 7, never wavered and is working in the field.

My youngest (junior) thought he’d probably do IR and take Arabic as his required foreign language. He’s in Jordan studying Arabic and majoring in IR and will probably get a minor in Arabic. He does say he’d have enjoyed college more being a history major and would probably have come out in much the same place, but with a department that was easier to work with. By the time he figured this out, it was really too late to make the switch. Spending a full year abroad when your college won’t accept credits for much of anything useful is a pain in the rear.

Me: I thought I’d major in History and Lit, ended up in Visual and Environmental Studies. About a 180 degree turn - no overlap in courses whatsoever!

DH: knew he’d major in sciences ended up with majors in Biology and Physics and said he probably had enough credits to have done Chemistry as well.
