Entered as a government major - graduated with double major in math and econ

Me: started out as pre-med, declared choral performance second year, dropped out due to health issues at the end. Wound up as ward secretary in CCU, and am now director of a cardiac ultrasound program – a discipline that didn’t even exist when I was in college.

DH: planned to major in some undefined science, but since he didn’t go to summer school between HS and college, got drafted to Vietnam. Wound up with AS in respiratory therapy, is now director of large department.

DD: has wanted to be a clinical child psychologist ever since she also read “Dibs” (was an assignment in 9th grade). She has been counselling friends since 4th grade, though. That being said, she got very interested in government/econ/poli sci through an amazing teacher this year. So I think it’s going to depend on where she winds up: if it’s one school, it’s psych; if it’s the other school in Washington, D.C., probably econ/math/public affairs (was accepted to their selective school of public affairs). But…who knows?

Me: Started as a poli sci major, then accounting/business, to econ, and I’ll be graduating next spring with a degree in Comp Sci.

Family members …

One entered undeclared, accepted to selective business school, ended up with a degree in English literature.

Another entered as EE major, graduated with EE degree.

One more entered in computer engineering, then applied mathematics and ended up with a degree in accounting.

An artistic member studied art and left school to marry. Later she completed her art studies and ended up with a BA and MA in art.

The last student entered as a business major and earned a degree in business administration.

Thank you to those who are posting whether these are current students or parents (older news). That is helpful too! To the OP of this thread…are all four of your results your kids…or are some you and your husband?

I started in sociology (stupid decision) and finished in sociology. Husband started in agricultural science and finished the same. We both went on to get our M.Div’s. I had planned that before starting college; he had not.

Oldest daughter started out in math education, and is now a math teacher. Younger daughter started out in pre-Physician Assistant and will graduate in August; already has two job offers as a PA.

I guess we are pretty boring and set in our ways…

DD started as a chemistry major. Will graduate with a chemistry major and math minor.

Great Thread!

S1- started as math major finished with a double math/planetary science, going to grad school for planetary science.

S2- starts next fall, talking about starting with chem/chem eng.

Well, I’m not a parent (Sophomore in college), but I came in undecided considering PolySci. Beginning of Sophomore year I switched to Econ with minors in Political Science, Philosophy, and Economics (PPE), and Anthropology, over Christmas break I dropped Anthropology and picked up a History major. 3 Economics classes killed me this semester and I realized I was dreading completing the major…so I am officially a History major with minors in Business Economics and PPE.

DD#1 Changed from Pharmacy to Pre-Med during HS senior year
Freshman- Neuroscience/Chemistry Major(Pre-Med)------->Senior- Commincation Science Disorders/ Chemistry- going to Graduate school to become a Speech Language Path MS Degree

jaylynn - re: Ultimate /Call Of Duty - AFAIK - Call Of Duty was sooo HS… Son has ZERO time to do video gaames now. re Ultimate… I knew nothing about it before my son decided to take it up in college, but wife & me have been to a couple of torunaments - and think it’s HUGE - and getting huger… So, I’m thinking every school has an Ultimate Club. Biggest sport I’ve never heard of - and also a lot of fun i think. Good luck!

me: started as double Chem/Math, immediately cured of that notion by a 7am calculus class and an intro chemistry class that met 11.5 hours a week(7.5 hours class with daily quiz+writing homework+problem sets, 3 hours lab, 1 hour test), switched to Humanities, graduated BA English, MBA in non-profits, Master’s in Higher Ed Administration & I work in that field.

DH: started in Civil Eng, hated it and dropped out, went back 8 years later, BA and MA in Architecture & works in the field.

DS1: started as music technology, switched to music, maybe switching to architecture - all in freshman year - he’s exploring and seems to love whatever he is currently taking.

DS2: game design & development starting in the Fall.

nugraddad: My S is still in hs, so Call of Duty (and similar lovely stuff) still a part of life. But when he joined his school’s Ultimate team at the beginning of this year has become more passionate about that than anything before, including school If he loved school as much as he loves Ultimate he’d be shoo-in for whatever school CCers are arguing about the most these days…

D1 entered as ChemE and is graduating in a couple of weeks as a ChemE. She says it’s a good thing she actually likes ChemE because she had absolutely no idea what it really was until she was deep into the major.

My sister went to school on a swim scholarship. She had many offers but wanted a physical therapy major. That really narrowed her choices. She changed to CS her first semester and then again to EET later on.

jaylynn, I have a cousin at Harvard pretty much majored in ultimate. He’s on the national team this year!

Started as a freshman at a large private university with a double major in journalism and physics.

Ended up transferring to a very different public school, did an independent major in lit and writing that was kind of a cobbled-together science writing package.
